U.S.A. LOAN TO BRITAIN
REPORTED TERMS. LONDON, December 5. Unofficial reports for Washington correspondents say there are good grounds for estimating that the American loan to Britain will total 1,100,060,000 dollars. Of this, 162,500,000 will be earmarked for goods already in the lend-lease “pipe-line” for Britain, and the remainder is called"“new money.” The details are' expected to be known, either on Thursday or Friday. It is assumed that the interest will' be 2 per cent., with repayment over a period of 37 to 50 years. ' An essential feature of the agreement is likely to be the ratifying by Britain of the Bretton Woods monetary agreement. AGREEMENT REACHED. (Rec. 2 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 5. Reuter’s Washington correspondent says it is authoritatively learned that Britain and America have reached agreement on a loan ’to Britain of 4,400,000,000 dollars. ’ ANGLO-U.S.A. FRIENDSHIP. (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, December 5. Understanding between nations required not one but hundreds of thousands of ambassadors, said Mr Attlee, in a speech at the Pilgrims’ dinner. Americans who during the war had been in England had given the British a greater understanding of the vital force of Americanism. He hoped that increased travel facilities would enable ordinary common people to maintain a constant interchange of visits across the Atlantic. Britain’s desire for friendship with America was not exclusive, and was not the result of any hostility towards other nations. Although the war had ended, there was still too many black-out curtains—-of ignorance, prejudices and suspicions. “Wp want light and understanding to shine •through our windows.”- -
