HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING HOKITIKA, November 22. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. In the absence of the Mayor (Mr Elcock) the DeputyMayor (Mr C. Caliari) presided, the following members being present:— Crs. S. G. Havill, S. G. Roberts, L. S. Ross, D. Pettigrew, H. C. Peart, I. J. Preston. Treasurer’s statement: — Receipts £1368/3/7; expenditure, £1464 12/5. Accounts amounting to £1755 were passed for payment. Mr E. W. Heenan waited on the Council with regard to the supply of electricity, suggesting the merging of the local power companies with the Grey Electric Power Board, and asking the Council to consider the proposal and discuss it with e Kanieri Electric Ltd.—The Council appointed the Mayor and Cr. D. Pettigrew to confer with the company. The foreman’s report was read and approved. " The sexton reported six inter-1 ments during October/ | Abbatoir report: Stock slaughtered for the month of October amounted to 5 cows, 36 heifers, 66 bullocks, 156 sheep, 3 pigs, 1 calf. Fees collected for month amounted to £7O/12/3. Fees for corresponding month last year were £47/1/1. No tenders were received for the painting of the pavilion on Cass Square. It was decided to prohibit the taking of sand from the beach between Tudor Street and Gibson’s Quay. The ' Council approved the usual prohibition of vehicular traffic in Revell Street between Stafford and Hamilton Streets on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The "Town Clerk’s Office to be closed from Christmas Day till January 3. —It was decided to carry out the six-monthly rubbish collection as soon as possible, and to enforce the by-law prohibiting the grazing of animals on the streets. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE Trumans Limited applied for permission to instal a septic tank at shop, section 170, corner of Weld and Tancred Streets. —Approved. Mr E. N. W.ells applied to instal a septic tank at residence, Sale Street north. —Approved. Mr J. C. Smith applied to instal a septic tank on section 880 Sale Street. —Approved. Messrs C. Caliari, A ,R. Elcock and T. W. Barrowman applied for permission to instal a septic tank for the new Lingerie Factory, sections 221 i and 203, Revell Street. The tank to be ’ erected on the Hokitika beach asj there is not sufficient room on the. freehold land. —Approved. C. H. Morison, agent for T. M. “ Staines, jun.,. applied for consent to subdivision of section 1135, Bealeyj Street. —Consent granted. | Robert Ireland applied for consent 1 ! to transfer the lease of Municipal Reserve 534 from R. H. Ford to him- j self. —Approved. !j The District Supervisor, Department of Housing Construction,« Chistchurch,- application for consent ' to subdivision of sections 943, 944 (area 2 roods) into two lots of 34 perches and 45 perches respectively. > The latter land to have a two-house unit erected thereon. —Approved. Mr Fredk. Oliver, who has been the occupier of lot 17 D.P. 737 of Municipal Reserve 482 (Whitcombe, Square) since December 31, 1916, i applied for a 21-years lease of 'the, said land under section 8 subsection ; of the Public Bodies’ Leases Act, at a rental of £4/10/- a year. ' The Greymouth Harbour Board advised that it has been suggested to. tender a dinner to Hon. J. O’Brien, I Minister of Marine, etc., in recogni-i tion of his outstanding work for the electorate, and asking whether the Council is willing to co-operate in i the matter. —Accepted. l! The Hokitika Fire Board drew at- ,| tention to the necessity of building; by-laws to provide that concrete or! brick dividing walls should be a standard requirement, especially in business areas of Weld and Revell Streets so as to provide sufficient fire breaks. —Action being taken.

R. P. Davies wrote, asking whether the Council would extend the pipe drain between 30 and 40 feet along the frontage of section 883, Stafford Street, to enable him to connect a septic tank thereto. —Referred to the Works Committee for report. George Sutherland, on behalf of the Automobile Association, wrote asking for permission to remove between 50 and 100 yards of gravel from the gravel pit at the north end of Sale Street—Permission granted, subject to Council’s supervision. The Hokitika Businessmen’s Association wrote urging building bylaws and also suggesting the Council discuss with the Railways Department the possibility of some alternative crossing in Stafford Street in place of the existing overhead footbridge.—Referred to Clerk to obtain information. It was decided to complain to the Railways Department against the continued blocking of traffic, ao Hampden and Weld Street crossings, this being particularly aggravating in view of the Stafford Street crossing being completely closed to vehicular traffic. Robert Ireland wrote applying foi grazing rights (from year, to yeai) on two sections in Livingstone Street.—Granted.
