I.L.O. CONFERENCE

FIRST WEEK’S CONFERENCE (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent.) LONDON, October 23. Representatives of the governments, employers, and workers of 39 nations have been meeting in Paris for the last week in the great amphitheatre of the Sorbonne, in the first conference of the. International Labour Organisation to be held on the Continent since before the war. Their task is twofold: (1) They propose to shape the constitution of the organisation, which is to be divorced from the League of Nations, and to fit it for an instrument of the United Nations; (2) they will discuss many problems, mostly on a high economic plane, for setting the post-war world back on a peaceful and prosperous course. Although invited to attend, Russia is the only major member of the United Nations not represented, but it is believed that when, the organisation severs its connection with the League of Nations the path will be cleared for Soviet participation. Italy, which terminated its membership in 1939, has applied to rejoin it, and it is believed that this application will be granted.
