AUCKLAND WATERSIDERS
“GO SLOW” CONTINUING AUCKLAND, October 23. The go-slow policy was continuea nn +he Auckland waterfront to-day. The promise of the Acting-Minister Oi Labour (Mr. O’Brien) that a conference would be held to investigate the muffin’s claims as soon as the men resumed normal work was discussed meetings of the executive of Ihe Auckland Waterside Workers Union, but the president (Mi. 11. Barnes) refused to make any comment when asked if a reply had been made to the Minister. A. special stop work meeting of all waterside workers has been called for to-morrow The go-slow policy has been maintained for a fortnight on the Glen Line vessel Denbighshire, on which the dispute arose, and for a week on all other ships. After an order from the Waterfront Control, Commission that the men would be paid only in accordance with the amount of work performed, 134 waterside workers employed on the Denbighshire received net wages ranging from 2/9 to 15/9 for the whole week when- paid last Thursday. The order applies now to all men, unionists and non-unionists, and about 2000 workers will be paid similarly low wages on Thursday for the .week just ended. Important food ships loading for the United Kingdom are being delayed by the dispute. Produce in the holds of several coastal ships may deteriorate if the go-slow policy continues much longer. There »re about 11,000 boxes of butter awaiting discharge from northern company vessels. The attitude of the Waterfront Control Commission remained the same as previously stated, that the men must return to work before a conference regarding their proposals could be held, said Captain R. E. Price, chairman of the commission, to-night. Representatives of the commission waited on the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser.) about the dispute this afternoon.
