WEEK-END RACING

DOMINION-WIDE MEETINGS

The weather was ideal for the Spring meeting of the Greymouth Trotting Club and there were large attendances on both days, the gate and tearoom receipts yesterday showing an increase of £350 on the corresponding figures for Labour Day last year. The track was in per Leet order and the racing was excellent. Features of the meeting, .outside the record totalisator figures and the sensational dividend, were the triple successes of Grattan Bells and St. Mary. Grattan Bells won two races easily on the first day, and yesterday, .just "as comfortably, won the principal event, the Labour Day Handicap, in 4.36 2-5 off a 4.41 mark, time that would have been much faster but for a slow pace set early. Grattan Bells, which is trained by H. J. Smith at Addington, should win more races before the present season ends, as he is in great form. St. Mary is a full sister to the former champion trotter. Sea Gift, and is owned by Mrs. W. Craddock, of Westport, and trained by W. R. L. Pascoe at Reefton. She won her three races easily, showing stamina and brilliance. In her fourth start she broke twice under pressure and- finished fourth. . , , Galvena won the principal event on the first day with consummate ease, but was not produced/6n the second dav. ’ Gold Case, a smart Gold. Bar three-year-old from Nancy Bingen, the dam also of Gold Pot and Pocket Book, was second on the first day and won decisively yesterday. She was sold only a week ago by her trainer, D. Bennett, to two Auckland sportsmen. at a good price. Margaret Hall. n Dillon Hall four-year-old, secured a first, a second, and a third; Ingle Belmer capped a second in the principal race each day with a stylish win in the last race of the meeting; Sir Walter left the mark properly only once in four races, and won that one from end to end; and Frank. Logan followed up a third on the first day with a win on the second. . The Grevmouth-trained and Hoki-tika-owned Loyal Peg gave O. Quinlan his first win as a trainer yesterday and he returned a good double figure dividend. Quinlan was. also the successful driver. Earlier in the day Loyal Peg had run second at good double-figure odds. Prince Lytton, another Greymouth-trained candidate, ran a good fourth on the fourth day and improved to secure a third yesterday. Sandy Potts, trained at Reefton, won with ridiculous ease on Saturday, but broke at the start of each of his two races yesterday. On the first day, W. R. Butt was fined £5 for careless driving of Port Bowen in the Royal Oak Handicap, and yesterday G. Cameron was similarly fined for a similar offence behind Frank Logan in the Hurricane An inouiry was held after the Labour Day Handicap yesterday at the instigation of the Stipendiary Steward, Mr. J. S. Shaw. Soon after entering the straight, as Netherby was challenging Terry O Shea, G. Withers (driver of- Terry O’Shea) out out his hand to nush Netherby off. Withers s explanation, which was accepted, was that Netherby Tiad struck his wheel and he had taken the action described as a precaution against having the wheel buckled.

St. Mary had too much pace for the others m the straight and won comfortably, while Kango got a run on the fence to be a good second, just ahead of Maximum Tin a break). Then came Loyal Nalive and Compris. Port Bowen swung across Kango and Upshot at the start and they lost a lot of ground. Golden Amazon lost all chance at the start.

WON DECISIVELY, Gold Case went up fast in the back straight the last time in the President’s Handicap, and led into the straight from Sandmaid Pimce Lytton. Harold Jinks and Travis Boy. Williams, nor the horse was injured. SENSATIONAL DIVIDEND. Sir Walter won the Ngahere Handicap with a lot in hand and returned a win dividend of just under a century and a half. He led all the 'way and was never, seriously challenged. He was followed into, the straight by Accord, St. Mary, (in a break), Kango, who had been one of the slowest away, and Golden Amazon, another slow beginner. Accord had no chance with the winner in the run home, and Compris, after breaking in the last half, finished fast into third place. St. Mary, who broke twice in the running, was fourth, and then came Kango and Golden Amazon. GREYMOUTH-TRAINED. The Greymouth-trained Loyal Peg scored a narrow win in the Cobden Handicap. She ran up into a good position in the last half, and with Margaret Hall followed Atawhero into the straight, with Flying Chips and Wee Peg next. Bien Sur tried to lead all the way in the Victory Handicap and nearly succeeded. He was still in front turning for home from Real Nugget and Terry O’Shea, with Ingle Belmer, who was slow away, coming fast. Bien Sur and Technique were fighting it out 50 yards from home, when Ingle Belmer swooped down on them and won going away by half a length from Technique, with Bien Sur a good third. Terry O’Shea was fourth and then came Real Nugget. Netherby broke up badly in the early stages and lost all chance. SENSATIONAL DIVIDEND RECORD AT VICTORIA PARK. Sir Walter, a four-year-old unhoppled trotter by U-Scott— Drumby, owned by Dr. J. G. Simpson, of Granity, and trained by H. J. Smith, at Addington, returned a sensational dividend of nearly a century and a-half in winning the Ngahere Handicap at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting at Victoria Park yesterday. ■ This was the highest dividend ever recorded at the Park, though Ohinemutu, a Real Guy mare, paid over £l3O when she won the Gold Coast Handicap at Victoria Park on April 5, 1935. It was a coincidence that Cantata, an older half-sister by Rey de Oro, to Sir Walter, and also owned by Dr. Simpson, paid, a dividend of over £l6O when she won her first race at the Westport meeting on April 13, 1935. Cantata went on to New Zealand Cup company. The biggest dividend recorded at West Coast meetings was returned by Jean Allerton, owned by the late Mr Ted Schaef and driven by the late Charlie Mercy. Jean Allerton m 1911 won a race at a Kumara meeting, and her dividend was in the vicinity of £2OO.

After the Mountain Handicap, at the instigation of the stipendiary steward, an inquiry was .held into the running of Echoist, which finished third. The allegation was that Echoist had paced during the race. After considering the evidence, the stewards decided to give L. Berkett, driver of Echoist, the benefit of the doubt, and the judge’s placings were unaltered. Results:—r Waitemata Handicap, 3.41 class One and a half miles: 5/6 Endowed (Berkett) 1; 11/11. AUSTRALIAN RACING ST. FAIRY WINS CAULFIELD MELBOURNE, Oct. 20. The Victorian champion jockey, A. Breasley, won his fourth successive Caulfield Cup to-day on the favourite St. Fairy, but only because two other jockeys R. Heather, who is suspended, and D. Munro, who was injured, were unable to accept the mount. Breasley rode St. Fairy in the finest possible style, and was helped by St. Fairy’s stable-mate Huntingdale, which raced to the front early and spread out the big field. This gave St. Fairy a perfect run in fourth or fifth place all the way to the turn. Breasley kept St. Fairy Availing on the rails in the last two furlongs until an opening occurred, and when it came half a furling from home, he shot the horse through to a convincing victory. The second favourite, Silver Link, followed St. Fairy throughout the greater part of the race, but was unable to respond when pressure was applied. The second and third horses, Rainbird and Punctilia, came with belated runs to gain places. Duntroon was fourth, earning a prize of £250. Royal Flight finished twentieth, and High Play last. High Play ran with the skin practically stripped from one of his hind legs. He fell down in a float while being transported to the course.

St. Fairy will start in the Melbourne Cup. He is owned by Mr. O. R. Porter, who also has Lawrence, the favourite for the cup. The attendance at Caulfield to-day was an all-time record foi' cup day.
