The death has occurred of General Plutarco Elias iCalles, the former President and “IroTf'Man” of Mexico, at the age of 68’ years. Since 1936 General Calles had lived m exile.
A London cablegram announced the death of Lady Eleanor Smith,- the novelist, at the age of 43 years. She was the elder daughter of the first Earl of Birkenhead. <
A Washington cablegram .stated that President Truman has nominated Mr. Avra M. Warren, of Maryland, as Minister to New Zealand, succeeding Mr. Kenneth Patton. Mr. Warren is an expert on Latin American affairs.
The death occurred-on Saturday evening at Greymouth of Mrs Ellen Johnston, aged 64 years, of Wilks Street. She was born in Staffordshire. England, and came to Greymouth 25 years ago. She was predeceased by her husband and her only relations reside in -England The funeral took place at Karoro Cemetery yesterday. Rev. Father J. Long celebrated Requiem Mass, at St. Patrick’s Church, and Rev. Father V. Flaherty conducted the service at the
graveside. The death occurred at Christchurch on Sunday following a lengthy illness of Mr. William Desmond Coppersmith, aged 28 years. Born at Denniston. he had lived at Greymouth for .several years, having been employed in the Liverpool State mine. He played Rugby football for Cobden a few years ago. He left Greymouth for Christchurch about a year ago. Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Betty (Christchurch) . and a brother, Russell, (Greymouth).
