: . MONTHLY MEETING HOKITIKA, October 18. i The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock presided over the following: Crs. C. Caliafi, H. C. Peart, J. J. Presr ■ ton, D. Pettigrew, L. S. Ross, S. G. . Havill, S. G. Roberts, and A. C. Armstrong. .. Finance statement: Receipts £lBO2 i. J9/9; expenditure £1869/18/-. Ac- ■ counts amounting to £1464/12/5 were passed for payment. , Abattoirs Report: Stock slaughter - ' ed for month of September amounted' to four cows, 34 heifers, 51 bullocks, 50 sheep, two pigs, and one calf. Condemned: Nil. Fees collected for month amounted to £53/0/9. Fees for corresponding month last year amounted to £56/15/2. The Overseer’s report was read and approved. The Sexton reported eight interments during September. Inward corresnondence included: Mr. D. J. Bradley,‘Sewel Street, pointing out the unsatisfactory condition of the footpaths about his section and asking that attention be given therto. —Referred to Overseer. Mr. T. Roberts, 82 Stafford Street, .drawing attention to the dangerous condition of the retaining wall along the length of his property facing Bealey Street which is in an advanced state of decay with the consequent danger of erosion and suggesting that the Council consider erecting a concrete retaining wall.—To be built of concrete. Applicant to contribute £5. MT. G. H. Neilson, 178 Sewell Street, application for permission to install a septic tank at his premises.—Approv- .' ed. Mr. R. J. Thorn, Mr. T. Growcott and" J. W. Innes (residing on the Ranieri Road outside of Borough) application for water supply. Applicants to pay total cost and extraordinary water rates. Mr. J. S. Johnson, 14 Spencer > Street stating that there is no footpath access to his property on y the north side of Spencer Street and he understands the work was authorised some time ago to connect with the Sewell Street footpath.—Referred to Works Committee. Mr. E. N. Wells, 144 Hall Street, stating there is no footpath along the frontage of his section and no entrance from the roadway and asking that the- Council provide access to his property.—Referred to Overseer for attention. Mr. Vv. L. Dwan, 122 Park Street,

asking the Council to tarseal the footpath at the frontage of his property and offering to pay proportion of the cost. —Council would not carry out odd pieces of tarsealing. Mr. F. D. Gillespie, Hon. Secretary, Westland School Sports’ Association, stating that the permission to use the Cass Square for School sports in April | last, could not be used owing to wet weather and now asking for permission to use the Square on Friday, the 2nd November for combined school sports and permission to charge an admission fee of one provedDistrict Supervisor Department of Housing Construction, Christchurch, advising that an intensive engineering investigation shows that the area of Whitcombe Square which was submitted to his Department presents great difficulty in development especially from the aspect of securing satisfactory drainage and that the cost of developing of the block to a satisfactory standard is not justified by the value of the units obtainable and his Department is therefore compelled to advise the Council that it is not intended to proceed further with this proposal, but that his Department will at first opportunity seek alternative blocks for the provision of the units required at Hokitika. \ Mrs. I. L. Perry stating that the | water channel along the frontage of ; her property in Hall Street, is block- ; ed at one end so that the storm water cannot escape. It would appear that the water channel should be graded to run north which is the natural fall.— Referred to Works Committee. Messrs H. Lawn and E. Olsen, Park Street, asking that the footpath along the east side of Hall Street across to ' Park Street be continued as at present, one has to make a detour to reach the north side of Park Street.—Referred to Works Committee for report. From Secretary Westland Racing Club re encroachment of boundaries in Dalton Street.—Referred to Cr. Havill. From John Hurren, Hampden Street applying for provision to install a septic tank.—Approved. It was decided that Foreman and the Works Committee confer with a view to properly organising the works I programme. | Cr. Armstrong reported for the Reserves Committee and recommended that Cass Square be harrowed and limed.

Cr. Pettigrew was authorised to make arrangements lor the clearing of the survey tracks to Lake Kanieri. Authority was given for the purchase of the necessary pipes for the water supply to the new sanitary disposal depot. Repairs to the library building were discussed and the Library Committee was asked to bring down a definite report. It was decided to request the Railway Department to keep the lights on the overhead bridge at night time and not only during train times. It was decided to call fresh tenders for the painting of the pavilion in Cass Square.
