Recovered: A surprise nomination for the Harcourt Stakes, weight-for-age, one mile and three furlongs, to be decided at Trentham on Labour Day, is that of Kindergarten. He was sent home to Gisborne from Riccarton a few weeks back because he did not give any promise of standing up to training, but has since been taken in hand again by>is former trainer, J. Nicholson, of Gisborne.

STARTER’S POWERS ASSOCIATIONDISCUSSION. CHRISTCHURCH. October 4. “I am sorry to find a letter going from the club to the starter telling him that it ‘will not tolerate.’ This is a very harsh statement to go from a club,” said Mr. J. R. McKenzie at a meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association this evening, when discussing a report from the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting club on the action of the starter, Mr. A. J. Hastings, in allowing a horse to start from any barrier position other than that drawn. The Metropolitan Club reported that after the running of the Winter Handicap the judicial committee held a meeting and had questioned the starter, Mr. Hastings, as to why Lady Dawn was allowed to start from No. 4 position instead of No. 1, which she had drawn. Mr. Hastings said he had given the driver. J. Davidson, permission to start from the outside instead of from the inside, because he knew the mare ran out when started from the rails. He had acted in this manner to give the public, the horses, and the drivers a fair start, and had' used the powers conferred on him by the rules. After hearing evidence, the committee had passed a resolution stating that it “will not tolerate any horse starting from a position other than that drawn,” and that when such need arose the matter should be reported to the committee to be investigated. The Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’. Association wrote protesting against the ruling of the club, the letter being signed by 37 licensed trainers.

McCarthy, at a meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association. Mr. McCarthy said that for more than 30 years Mr. Kitchingham had been a member of the board, and during the last six years he had been'president. His- interest in trotting, however, had been awakened . many years before his term of office, and he could be called one of the pioneers of the light. harness snort. In the framing and interpretation of the Rules of Trotting Mr. Kitchingham had done work of great value.
