HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, Sept. 20. The Hokitika Borotigh Council met yesterday. Present: Mr. A. R. Elcock (Mayor), Crs. C. Caliari, D; Pettigrew, 11. C. Peart, A. C. Armstrong, S. G. Havill, F. J. Preston, and L. S. Ross. At the request of the Mayor, Mr. E. W. Green was present and was presented with a Certificate of Merit for his services in salvage and reclamation during the war, on behalf of the National Council for the Reclamation of Waste. Mr. Green suitably replied, and was emphatic that little could have been accomplished without the willing help and co-operation of the local Boy Scouts. Treasurer’s Statement: Receipts, £1,911/12/3. Expenditure £3,487 12/-. Accounts amounting to £1,816 18/-. were passed for payment. The Foreman’s report was read and approved. The sexton reported nine interments for the month.

In order to prevent the making of unsightly and dangerous paths across Cass Square it was decided to close the Stafford and Brittain Street and Weld and Bealey Street corner gates until further notice. Abattoirs report: Stock slaughtered for month of August amounted to two cows, 36 heifers, 61 bullocks, 82 sheep, four pigs, one calf. Condemned nil. Fees collected for month amounted to £6O/12/9. Fees for corresponding month last year £72/18/9. It was decided to ask the Railway Department to give attention to the Weld Street crossing. The tender of H. A. Thompson Ltd. for cleaning and repairing the monuments in the town was accepted. The Mayor reported on the work of the committee set up to investigate the new town hall proposal. On the motion of Cr. Ross it was decided to make a formal application to the Minister of Internal Affairs for a license for a picture theatre. If granted the Council proposed incorporating a theatre in the new town hall building. Nine tenders were received for the sanitary contract and it was decided to refer four of them to the Health Inspector for report. < CORRESPONDENCE The representative for the Westland Boroughs notifying that the annual conference of South Island Local Bodies Assn, is to be held in Dunedin on October 24.

R. C. Kay, applied for permission to instal a septic tank at section 1415 Park Street.—Granted, subject to Health Regulations. Mr. F. W. Ross applied for permission to instal a septic tank at section 379 Rolleston St. — Granted subject to Health Regulations. Mrs. L. A. Weiblitz applied to instal a septic tank at section 700 Fitzherbert Street. —Granted subject to Health Regulations. The District Public Trustee, Greymouth, advised that under' the will of the late William Brown the sum Sof £5OO has been invested in the Common Fund of the Public Trust I under the title of the “Euphemia Brown Memorial Fund” and the income derived therefrom will be paid in ! the month of December in each year | for the Mayor for the time being in 1 office in the Borough of Hokitika to be I applied by him in providing Christmas cheer or comforts for such poor orphan children or poor aged and infirm persons residing in and around the Borough of Hokitika in such manner and in such shares and proportions as such Mayor shall think fit. Mr. R. Lucas complained that the shed owned by Mr. E. Wood adjoining the hotel premises is within 2ft. 6in of the boundary and there is no guttering on the shed which causes dampness to the hotel. Mr. A. T. Thorn, Rolleston Street, leasee of Municipal Reserve 54 wrote asking for two loads of coarse shingle or large pit gravel in order that he may make stone drains on the Reserve to drain it as the surface water cannot escape under existing conditions. —Referred to Works Committee.

Mr. J. Gardyne, Gibson Quay, asked that a downpipe be installed at the !corner of Brittain Street and Gibson Quay to allow the surface water to escape.—Referred to Works Commiti tee. The Secretary. Hokitika High School Board, advised that the Board was prepared to grant a lease to the Council, at a nominal rental, for such term as the Council desires under the Public Bodies’ Leases Act 1908, of lots 7, 8 and 9, of High School Board Reserve No. 4.36 A subject to the Council meeting the cost of the surrender of Newman’s lease and re-entry in respect of Toohey’s Motors Lease.—Accepted, Council to ask for 21 year lease with right of renewal. Mr. John Murdoch, Sale Street, applied under section 69 of the Rating Act, 1925 in respect of section 3D and 4D Revell Street, Hokitika.—Granted. The Superintendent, Kanieri Electric Limited advised that the Company arc not prepared to reduce their offer of £l7/4/9 per annum for the proposed increased candle power in the business area.—No action taken. i The Secretary, Hokitika Beautifying Association conveyed Association’s appreciation of Council’s efforts to prohibit traffic across the grass in Cass Square and stating that on this point ithe Council are assured of the Association’s support. Also advising that the Association has on hand three dozen Oriental Plane trees which are offered as suitable for planting in the square.—Referred to Reserves Committee with power to act. W. Perry & Co., wrote objecting to the pie cart stand being close to their store as offensive matter is left along the store frontage.—Owner of pic carl, to shift across the street. From Misses Berendt, Weld Street, 1 applying for access to property.—Referred to overseer. From J. Hurren asking attention to public drain through his property.— Referred to Works Committee. From Mrs. A. R. Elcock applying for permission to instal a septic tank. —Granted subject to Health Regulations. From J. T. Green, The Terrace, asking for attention to access road from cemetery.—Referred to Works Committee. It was decided to sow Cass Square with lime and also when the ground was suitable to harrow it.
