Mr. L. Withers left this morning on return to Wellington. Mr. J. Heffernan left for Christchurch this morning. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Powell left this morning for Christchurch. A Paris cablegram announced the death of a former Premier, M. Tardieu, after a long illness. Mr. and Mrs. S. Jeffery, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. Baty. Coal Creek, left this morning On return to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Vickerman, Motueka, announced the engagement of their eldest daughter, Mary, to Bill, only son of Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Evans, Greymouth. Rt. Rev. Dr. P. F. Lyons, Bishop of Christchurch, will arrive in Greymouth by express Thursday afternoon, on his third visit to the district since his appointment. Sir Harry and Lady Batterbee arrived at Greymouth .this morning from Westport en route to the South Westland glaciers. Sir Harry has lately relinquished the office of High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand. The appointment of LieutenantColonel John F. Fardell, of Reading, England, as general manager of the Christchurch Tramways, was confirmed at yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the board. Mentioning high military qualifications-held by Colonel Fardell, the chairman of the board, Mr. W. S. Mac Gibbon, said the board felt it has secured a man who would bring new life to the tramway system in Christchurch.—P.A.

The death occurred suddenly at Kokiri last evening of Mr. John Nestor, aged 75 years. He was born at Callaghans and lived all his life on the West Coast, including 20 years at Kotuku and 20 years at Baxter’s Siding. He is survived by his wife, four sons, Noel (Kotuku), Daniel (Ruru), Eric (Kokiri) and Martin (Wellington) and three daughters, Mesdames A. Ferguson (Levin) and A. Brown (Runanga) and Miss Lena Nestor (Kokiri). The funeral will take place at Karoro to-morrow.
