The Ashburton Handicap was won by the consistent place-getter Silver Sal, who wore down Roval Rae in the last few strides to gain a wellearned success. Royal Rae had 'charge commencing the final furlong, but bore out under pressure, otherwise he would not have been overhauled. The top-weight and favourite. Kevin, threw out a challenge early in the run home; but ran into trouble, and lost some valuable ground. He then finished very fast to be only half a length from Royal Rae at the post. Martial Note was also in the final picture for fourth, a head away. Gunga Din, Palfrey, Foxhaven and Atreus followed, with Little Secret and Sir Tague always in the rear.

John Griqq Stakes: Essay made a bold attempt to justify her favouritism for the John Grigg Stakes, and only submitted in the last few strides to a well-grown filly. Swingalohg, a half-sister by Battle" Song to John o’ London. This was the winner’s first apnearance in public, and her finishing run suggested her later prospects. Her dam Raphis is a sister to Phar Lap. Loyal Lady, a winner in Otago last season, was a good third, two lengths in front of Competitor, who did not keep a straight course, and caused interference near the halfmile to the second choice, Confusion, who finished very fast into fifth place.

Surnriee Win: Lord Advocate had a surprise win in the Spring Handicap. his first since his success on the West Coast in February last. He was always well up and followed Sterling Lad and John o’ London into the straight, with Burberry, Salmi and Whackie handy, and Beau Cheval coming into prominence wide out. Lord Advocate Soon drew to the front in the run home and was not seriously troubled to win from Salmi, who put in some good work over the concluding stages. Beau Cheval drew attention to his later prospects by dashing up for third, beating Sterling Lad on the post. Piccolo, who rah into trouble commencing the run home, was next, in front of Whackie, Golden Souvenir and Burberry.

Comfortable Win: Prince Dolomite bad a comfortable task in the County Hurdles. He and Bali went to the last fence together, but once on the fiat he went away to win without any

pressure. Bali held on for a good second, three lengths in front of Maggiore, who lea for a furlong round the home turn, and would benefit by the race. Court Dress headed the remainder. The third choice, Sandy Cape, gave an inglorious display, and his owner (Mr. P. Louis), trainer’ (W. Hogan) and rider (W. Hillis) were called before the stewards, who accepted their explanation. Sons of Defaulter: Both divisions of the Novice Stakes were won by sons of Defaulter. Sanskrit, a chestnut filly from the Iliad mare Cyrillian, won the first after trailing Nightstalk to the last furlong, winning easily from Nightstalk, with Lexia a fair third, and Gold Spur, who made the pace for most of the way, next. Major Argosy, bracketed with Lexia, came from well back in the last furlong of the second division and recorded an impressive win from Hansel, who took charge from Finalist early in the run home. He is a chestnut colt from Lady Argosy, and a successful career can be predicted for him.

Decisive Wins: The Penscroft Hack Handicap also had to be run in two divisions. Weld Cona, favourite on both machines, ran past the leaders, Nurnie and Olga’s Choice, commencing the run home, and went on to win without being called on. Sir Bernard flashed up for second money from Prince Leighon, who was always hands, but did not finish on as anticipated. Nurnie petered out nearing home into fourth place. Rahiri, well handicapped at 7.11 in the second division, had the advantage of a 71b apprentice allowance, and overhauling the pacemaker, Whitley, halfway down the straight, had a decisive win from Whitley, with Dash o’ Dink finishing on into third place in front of Falconbridge, who did not shape up to expectations.

Selma Trot: Several of the candidates for the Selma Trot broke up at the start, these including Bay Jack, Granny’s Luck, Renown’s Pride, Glen Devon and Lady Spray. Lady Ngaio followed Abel Tasman and Pencarrow to the five furlong post, where she went to the front, and leading into the straight from Sand Maid, Abel Tasman, Sandiford and Pencarrow, carried on to have a comfortable win from Sand Maid, with Pencarrow a close third in front of Renown’s Pride and Huntingdon Lass.

Rakaia Trot: In spite of breaking at the start and losing ground, Sunny Nelson and Plunder Bar fought out the finish of the Rakaia Trot. Sir Carol held the lead during the middle stages, but with seven furlongs to go Gamble King went to the front and led to the straight from Sir Carol, Margaret Hall, Lady Spray and Plunder Bar. Sir Carol broke under pressure and Plunder Bar came out to challenge Gamble King. Plunder Bar was in front inside the final furlong, but over the concluding stages Sunny Nelson executed a powerful run from the middle of the field, and beat Plunder Bar going away. Gamble King hung on well for a close third, three lengths in front of Navy Queen, with Margaret Hall, Top Line. Grattan Bells and Lady Spray following.

With a racing career of only two public appearances, the three-year-old Brown Derby, owned by Mr. J. R. McKenzie, Christchurch, and trained at Riccarton by S. Barr, is being recommended for addition to the schooling list. This action is being taken by Mr. B. N. Sandilands, stipendiary steward, with the approval of the judicial committee of the Wanganui' Jockey Club. Brown Derby was ,a candidate for the Wanganui Guineas, run yesterday. He was ridden by S. Green, and was fourth favourite in a field of 'nine. On the first day at the Wanganui meeting he contested a division .of the Maiden Race, and bored off the course when making his run in the straight. During last week, while be,ing prepared for his Guineas engagement, he was worked in a hood and winkers, and he wore this apparatus in yesterday’s classic. He started from the outside position, ran very wide on the first turn, and his rider could not control hiiv as the field swept on to make the turn into the back straight. Near the six furlongs barrier the horse and rider parted company, and Green had the misfortune to break a leg in his fall. Brown Derby was not injured.

The stipendiary steward asked for an inquiry into the accident, and the trainer was in attendance. It was announced after the hearing that the Racing Conference would be recommended to add Brown Derby to the schooling list. As long as a horse’s name appears on the schooling list it is not eligible for entry in flat races. Except for hanging out in the straight, Brown Derby was tractable in his first, day’s engagement, and it is thought that the hood and winkers

were responsible for his erratic behaviour yesterday. It was intended to take him on to Auckland to race in the Great Northern Guineas at Ellerslie next month. Impressive Victory: The Guineas was won by Royal Raider, a chestnut gelding by Royal Chief from Moonraider, owned by the Bombay trainer A. Higgins, and trained at Trentham by P. Spratt. Royal Raider began smartly from No. 1 position, opened up a gap of four lengths on the field in the first furlong, and led all the way. Gigli was the only runner to make any impression on the winner, but failed by a length to catch him. Al Sirat, the second favourite, was cut. back in the early running, and had too much ground to make up.

IMMEDIATE WINS TWICE SENSATION AT ROSEHILL SYDNEY, September 15. The New Zealand horse Immediate won the Rosehill Camellia Stakes twice yesterday after one of the biggest sensations in Sydney racing. In the first run, the starting apparatus failed and the starter shouted to the field to come back, but most of them finished the course. Immediate, starting at an outside price, won from Grand Prodige and Abbeville; four of the runners did not complete the race. The jockeys of Britannia and War Eagle were catapulted from the saddle. When the starter shouted “Go” and struck the starting lever, two wires attached to the lever snapped. The tapes did not rise and the w’hole field crashed through and tore part of it away from the barrier. After the race the starter ordered the horses and jockeys back to the post. The bewildered crowd lined the fence and watched the horses troop back towards the seven furlongs post. The stewards met hurriedly and decided to re-run the Stakes after the last race and the starter was told to send the horses back to the enclosure. An announcement over the public address system that all bets were to stand brought jeers from the crowd. Later, when it was announced that Melhero (favourite), War Eagle, and Sir Neith would not start in the re-run, backers besieged the bookmakers demanding a return of their money. On appeal by the bookmakers, the stewards held to theiv “bets stand” decision, and police had to be rushed to patrol the enclosure, which was surrounded by 1000 people shouting abuse at the stewards. The totalisator, which did not operate on the second running, refunded all the money invested on the scratched horses, Melhero, Sir Neith, and War Eagle.

Immediate, who led practically all the way ’in the “First” Camellia Stakes, came from behind in the rerun to win narrowly from Modulation and Tahmoor in time equalling the Rosehill record for seven furlongs. Immediate started equal favourite m the re-run. His trainer E. J. Ellis, at first did not want to start the horse the second time but after watching him carefully for about an hour after his first race he decided to give him a chance of winning again. Praise is accorded the New Zealand jockey, L. Hare for 'getting Immediate first past the post twice to win the Camellia Stakes. linnicuisto hcis now ousted Removal I

and Russia from pre-post favouritism for the Metropolitan Handicap. The Epsom favourite, Shannon, recorded his third successive success in winning the Hill Stakes. High Play finished seventh in the Highweight Handicap. Results:— Hill. Stakes, one mile and 110 yards. —Shannon 9.0 (Munro) 1; Cold Shower 2; Accession 3. Seven starters. Two lengths; two lengths. Time, 1.45.

Time, 1.52 L Rosehill Cup; one mile and aquarter.—Bragger 7.9 (Hanley) 1; Beau Monde 2; Good Idea 3. Nineteen starters. Neck: neck. Time, 2.4. Theo Marks Camellia Stakes, seven furlongs.—lmmediate 8.10 (Hare) 1; Modulation 2; Tahmoor 3. Ten starters. Half a head; half a length. Time, 1.24. JOCKEY HARE’S MISTAKE (Rec. 12.35 p.rn.) SYDNEY, Sept. 17. Unfamiliarity with the Rosehill course almost caused the New Zealand jockey; Lex Hare to rob Immediate of victory in the re-run of the,

Camelia Stakes, says the “Herald’s” turf writer. Hare mistook the winning post after taking the lead, from Luffham and Tahmoor in the last furlongs. He was easing Immediate just as Modulation, a noted finisher, ranged alongside at the peak,of his run. “My heart nearly stopped, but Immediate leaped ahead again, and just got there,” said Hare. Immediate’s great sprinting performances on Saturday do not- mean, that he is a certain Epsom, runner. The programmes of Immediate and High Play will be decided by; their owners who are coming fromDNew Zealand. The trainer, Ellis, said it was most likely that High Play"would run in the Epsom and Immediate in the Metropolitan. He added: “But they are both entered in each race and have separate owners, so it is possible they will both start in the Epsom and the Metropolitan.”

UNDERWOOD STAKES MELBOURNE, September 15. Caulfield Cup candidates ran in the Underwood Stakes, a race run at Flemington. which resulted:—St. Fairy 9.0 (Heather) 1; Royal Gem 2; Counsel 3. Ten starters. 1 Half a length; a neck. Time, 1.36 f.
