N.Z. COASTAL VESSELS

LIFTING OF BLACK-OUT. WELLINGTON, September 6. The Navy has lifted the black-out ! imposed at the outbreak of the war on all ships in New Zealand coastal waters. On Tuesday night, for the first time since September, 1939, the Lyttelton and Nelson ferry steamers sailed with all their deci; lights full on. : Portholes may now bo opened, but, as [on most ships they have been sealed, this will not bo possible immediately. Inter-island fei ry steamers will shortly have the paint removed from their portholes and the blue-shaded .lights and screens on the Rangatna and the Wahine will be taken off as opportunity permits. Passengers will appreciate the fact that they are now •permitted to smoke and light matches on deck. The opening of portholes will ■bring a big improvement in the ventilation of vessels not fitted with forced air systems. The black-out was first imposed on all shipping in September, 1939, when the Admiralty took control of the Merchant Navy.
