TWO JOBS

[TO the editor.] Sir, —After reading the letter -in the “Star,” signed “Soldier” and the previous one regarding the caretaker of our local fire station I might mention that the caretaker’s quarters are not vacant as “Soldier” believes. Mr White, the present caretaker, has spent approximately 35 years as 'a volunteer for the Greymouth Fire Board, and after this fine record I think a little consideration should be shown Mr White in not holding down two paid jobs as one is a volunteer job, and I think he is the right man in the right place. “Soldier’’ mentions that our local foundry are after engineers, which I think is quite correct, but I am, sure they would prefer young men mostly conscripts, not volunteers. Why not apply?—Yours, etc., VOLUNTEER SOLDIER, j

[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir,—After reading “Soldier’s” letter in the “Evening Star” about the single man who in his opinion is holding down two jobs, may I state that it always pays to • look before you leap, and not to be led blindly into anything. According to his remarks, it seems as though he had been getting his information from a member of the Board. If this is so, I can assure all that this person knows about as much as “Soldier” does, which is nothing. Is he aware of the fact that this man was employed at the Dispatch Foundry for a period oi approximately 40 years, and it was only three years ago that he was forced to give up his position owing to illhealth. I suppose that this man can sit back and live on air. Well, “Soldier,” if you can, don't think everyone else can. May I state this, that he has served about 32 years as a voluntary member of the Greymouth Fire Brigade, and if you think you have done as good a job as he has in that time, well, I’ll take my hat off to you. If you are so in need of a house, why don’t you go and see the Rehabilitation Officer? I understand he is the man that will fix you up, not the ratepayers of Greymouth. 2 ours, etC-^Q UN - DR y WORKER.
