DISLOCATED NECK. NELSON, July 23. A fractured dislocation of the neck was suffered by an airman, Eric Langridge, when he was thrown from his bicycle in Haven Road. He was admitted to the Nelson Public Hospital .and his condition this afternoon was stated to be serious. Langridge is a well-known Auckland racing cyclist. He is stationed at the Nelson R.N.Z.A.F. station. When the lighting dynamo slipped into the wheel of his cycle Langridge was catapulted into the roadway. STRUCK BY EXPRESS INVERCARGILL, July 23. Severe injuries were suffered by William Borlase, driver and sole occupant of a truck which was struck by the Dunedin-Invercargill express, at Edendale to-day. The express was travelling at a fair speed when the accident occurred and the truck was completely wrecked. Borlace was taken to the Southland Hospital where he was found to be suffering from multiple injuries and mild concussion. Borlace is a surveyor employed by the Southland Electric Power Supply. ESCAPING DEFAULTER PALMERSTON N., July 24. Pleading guilty to a charge of escaping from the defaulter s detention camp at Whitanui, near Foxton, in October, 1943, Edward Charles Tapp, aged 23, a motor driver, who was arrested at Upper Hutt, was sentenced by Magistrate Lawry to three months’ imprisonment. It was explained to accused that he would have to serve a period equal to that while he was at liberty, 655 days, in detention after the end of the war. DUNEDIN FIRE BRIGADE DUNEDIN, July 23. Acting on a resolution which it adopted at its meeting last week when a partial strike, instituted by the members of the Dunedin Fire Brigades Union was discussed, the Metropolitan Fire Board has laid informations against the brigadesmen with the object of legal action being taken. It is ‘understood that informations have been laid against approximately 30 persons, one of whom is W. C. McDonnell, secretary of the Union, and also a member of the Board. Some of the papers have already been served. The decision to do no work other than turning out to fires, and repairing of any breakdown in the fire alarm system until the dispute over the increase in wages was settled, was made by members of the Union on June 25. All attempts since then to reach an agreement have failed.
