The serious proportion that the outbreak of scarlet fever had now reached in Auckland was disclosed by the chairman of the Hospital Board (Mr A. J. Moody) at a meeting last night when he said that extra accommodation would‘have to be found to cope with the patients. “There has been an alarming increase in scarlet fever cases in the last few. weeks,” said Mr Moody. “It started in Christchurch, and the Health Department has been awake to it. The infectious diseases block at the Auckland Hospital is overcrowded, and the deputy-medical superintendent assures me the position is desperate. He asks for extra accommodation.” There are at present more than 50 scarlet fever cases. In reference to the Auckland epidemic of scarlet fever, the Dunedin Health Officer stated that in the last few months there had not been more than half a dozen cases in Otago and Southland. There was a local epidemic last Winter, when the total cases for the two provinces was 1000 with about 70 persons isolated per week.—P.A. Infants’ Gowns in cream winceyette.
