MAIN PORT REDUCTIONS AVELLINGTON, July 20. A reduction in the hours of waterside workers on certain vessels has been made b.v the Waterfront Cont ro! Commission. The order applies particularly to Saturday afternoons, and concerns Auckland, Wellington. Lyttelton. and Otago. Clause A states that overseas food vessels, including .vessels carrying military supplies, vessels discharging coal, and feeder vessels, yzili work the hours previously prescribed. Clause B states that other oversea;; vessels and intercolonial vessels will work on Sundays and a night shill where three or more coiitmuous nights’ work exists but no work- will be performed on Saturday afternoon except as provided in clause D. Clause C also states, with regard to coastal vessels of more than 350 tons and coastal vessels under 350 tons discharging cement at Wellington, that they shall not be required to work a night shift, but shall work Sundays and holidays, but no work shall be performed on Saturday afternoon, except as provided in clause D. . Clause D states: ‘‘Overseas, intercolonial, and all coastal vessels other than vessels included in clause shall cease work at noon on Saturday, except where the vessel may reasonably finish by 1 p.m. or 5 p.m.. and permission is granted by the Waterfront Controller to work the meal hour to I p.m. to finish, or to work to 5 p.m. to finish.” Application to work the meal hour, or to 5 p.m. must be made to ihe Waterfront Controller in sufficient time to enable him to arrive at a decision before 9.15 a.m. cm the Saturday. AVhile only one vessel is operatin'* the inter-island steamer shall be worked on Saturday afternoon at Lyttelton, but an investigation shall be made to determine whether Saturday afternoon work is necessary when two vssels are engaged in the service. The whole question of hours of work on the waterfront will be reviewed after the end of August, 1945. the order states.
