LEAGUE FOOTBALL
COAST V. CANTERBURY. The first representative League football match to be played on the West Coast this season will take place at Wingham Park to-morrow, when Canterbury will meet West Coast in a challenge for the Anisy Shield. West Coast has a strong side, retaining most of the stalwarts who have brought the League game into prominence during the war years and includes the best of the younger players who have recently joined the senior ranks but show ability that can be taken as an indication that the West Coast will field a formidable representative side for many years to come, Canterbury, particularly in the three-quarter line, has a number of experienced players who have proved themselves in previous games on the West Coast and cannot be taken too lightly. R. Brown and C. H. Davison are well known internationals and with L. Bench, a tried winger, make a formidable scoring trio. The fiyeeighths are good, one. Lewis, having represented the South Island last year. The forwards are big and will be more weighty than the Coast pack, and most of them have visited the Coast before. L. O’Brien, who will hook for them, is a former member of the Brunner Club, being a member of the R.N.Z.A.F. at present. In the Coast side, a great deal of interest will centre on the displays of J. Soster and A. Stenhouse in the backs, both of whom are making their first appearance for the province. The game will be their trial, particularly for Soster. for places in the team to go to Auckland. In the forwards the display of W. Glynn will be watched with interest, for this former’ international is staging a magnificent comeback. The remainder of the team has changed little from that which decisively defeated Canterbury last year, but the additions will improve it further. With bus services running to suit patrons, there should be a large attendance.
