L.A.C. L. O’Brien will arrive from Christchurch to-morrow morning on a visit to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. O’Brien, Dobson.

Captain C. W. J. Pierson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Pierson, Kumara, arrived in Christchurch, yesterday from Italy. . .

Mr. T. A. Bourhe, Telephone Exchange clerk, Hokitika, has been transferred to a similar .position at Greymouth and will take up duties on July 30.

Mr. H. W. Hay, Accounts Clerk, Money Order Branch, Chief Post Office, Greymouth, who has been transferred to the position of Assistant Auditor, General Post Office, Wellington, will leave next Tuesday.

Lieutenant-Colonel P. L. Bennett, D. 5.0., 0.8. E., M.C., 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, is lent to tne War Office for special employment under the Allied Control Commission at Headquarters, South-west Pacific Area, and is to be granted the temporary rank of colonel, says the Gazette.—P.A.

Advice has been received from London by the Air Department that the following officers have been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross:—Flight Lieutenant Andrew Ralph Evans, Auckland; Flying Officer Brian John O’Connor, Stoke; Pilot Officer Ridgewell Cullum, Palmerston North. —P.A.

Lieutenant-Colonel G. E. Archey, director of the Auckland museum, has been selected by South-East Asia Command to take up an appointment as monuments and fine arts officer in the civil affairs branch in that area. He will laave New Zealand shortly to take up his new duties. This was announced last evening by the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones). —P.A.

Mr. W. Payne, a member of the Greymouth Swimming Club and the West Coast Swimming Centre, whose marriage will take place shortly, was met this week by members of both bodies, and on their behalf, the president of the Centre, Mr. F. W. Baillie, made him a .presentation of a fountain pen, wishing him every success.

The death took place at Greymouth, this afternoon, of Mr. William Henry Gualter, of Fox Street, Cobden. He was born in Invercargill, and came to the West Coast as a young man, and worked as a sawmiller. He is survived by his widow and two infant sons, two sisters, Mrs. C. Dudley (Bell Hill) and Mrs. F. rieslin (Runanga). The funeral will take place at Karoro on Sunday afternoon.

The death occurred early this morning at Ruru, of Mr. Laurence Stewart .Rankin, aged 56 years. He had resided in the district for the past 15 years and had worked in the sawmilling industry. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. C. L’andsdown (Blackball), and two sons, Peter (Ruru) and Laurence, the latter of whom has been a prisoner of war and was expected to arrive at Ruru to-day.

The award of the C.B.E. has been made to Brigadier Thomas Joseph King. 0.8. E. He is a Regular Force officer, and prior to going overseas with the second N.Z.E.F., was Director of Ordnance Services and Chief Ordnance Officer, Trentham. He served with the Eight and Ninth Middle East Armies in the same capacity, and on the liberation of Athens was concerned with the provision of food and clothing for the Greeks. He was awarded the 0.8. E. in January 1941, and returned to New Zealand last May.—P.A.
