HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, July 18. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock presiding over the following members: Crs. H. C. Peart, S. G. Havill, W. H. Stopforth, A. C. Armstrong and S. G. Roberts. s A deputation (M. Houston and E. W. Heenan) from Hokitika Swimming Bath Committee, asked the Council to assist in renovation. It was decided to supply the labour for the preliminary work, and to make provision on the estimates for the expense incurred. , „ innl 14/9 Accounts amounting to £lO3l 14/3 were passed for payment. Abattoir report: Stock slaughtered for the month of June —6 cows, 9 heifers, 90 bullocks, 117 sheep, 17 lambs, 4 pigs, 4 calves. Fees £6o 11/10; same month previous year, £72 15/9. It was decided to purchase 78 feet of 6in. pipes and 52 feet of 2ft. 3in. pipes for works in hand. Regarding the purchase of a trailer it was left to the Chairman of Works and Town Clerk with power to purchase. To obviate horses slipping in frosty weather it was decided t° advise the Railways Department that if it deposited two truck loads oi ashes at the end of Hokitika Bridge,, the Council’s staff would arrange the carting and spreading of same between rails. It was decided to call tenders foi the renewal for a further three years of the sanitary contract. The report of the Reserves Committee was adopted, and the reports of the foreman and sexton were approved. . i. /-i .. A sub-committee consisting ol Crs. Havill, Roberts. Stopforth and Armstrong were appointed to report on the provision of public conveniences. It was resolved to inform the Beautifying Association that the Council was not in favour of Oriental plane or English beech trees for street planting, but requested that trees of a shrub nature be planted. CORRESPONDENCE The Secretary of the ’ Hokitika High School Board asked the Council to appoint a representative on the Board.—Cr. Armstrong was apP °The d Free Library Committee advised that of three applicants . the Library Committee ‘had appointed Mrs Dorothy N. Dorreen as secretary at a salary' of £26 per annum and asked the Council to ratify the appointment. —Approved. The Secretary of the Westland Racing Club applied for the °! Cass Square (on behall ol the Spoils Executive of the Westland Racing Club) with the right to charge admission fees; the sports meeting to be held on Boxing Day, December 26.— G Mrs ed k. E. O’Sullivan applied for permission to instal a septic tank on part section, Sale Street. —Approved subject to usual conditions. Air P. J. B. Kirwan applied to transfer Certificate of Purchase No 1222 respecting graves 3058 A ana 30588, Block 129, Bft x Bft, Hokitika Cemetery, to Joseph Manzoni, and statin 0, that the original certificate ol purchase dated February 24 has been lost. —Approved. , The Mayor of Greymouth wrote, stating that at a meeting ol the Executive of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association, held in cnrisichurch towards the end of last montn, the question _ arose as to the most suitable place in the South Island io the main overseas air travel terminal. A resolution was passed as follows:— “That the Government be asked tc expedite the preparation oi its postwar civil aviation policy and make it known to local bodies and otheis. who will be interested to prepare loi it as early as possible.—Council to support motion. ; Mr R. Cumming applied foi peimission to erect a small cowshed on part of Gibson Quay, east oi Livingstone Street.— Approved. The Town Clerk, Greymouth, ad vised that at the last meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council the question of establishing anew aoattoir to serve the whole ol the \\ est Coast districts was discussed and asking for the Councils views on die proposal.—No action taken. The Royal Humane Society of Nev Zealand, ‘Christchurch, asked lor a contribution for the ensuing year.— Usual grant of £2/2/- made. . The Hokitika Fire Board advised that in respect of Sec. 25 oi the Fire Brigades Act, 1926, the Hokitika Borough Council’s contribution to the Hokitika Fire Board for the yeai ending March 31, 1946, has been fixed ■it £282 payable in four quarterly Lta* ol each °n the first days of May, July, Octobei, .1945, Ull L Gooch asked for adequate drainage'at the front of his shop m Hampden Street.—Referred to Works Committee, with Power to act Application from A.
