CONTROL ORDERS

MINOR CANCELLATIONS

WELLINGTON, May 13. In a statement on Saturday the Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan) announced the revocation of four control notices which the changed simply situation and the successful encl of the war in Europe now make possible. “A Gazette notice will be appearing next week cancelling all austerity restrictions on men’s outer wear, i.e. suits, overcoats, shirts and pyjamas,” Mr. Sullivan said. “Unfortunately, the supply of certain textiles for women’s clothing is still difficult, and a continuance of austerity restrictions on women’s and girls’ underwear and outer clothing is unavoidable. The restrictions will be relaxed and finally revoked just as soon as the. critical labour and materials position is overcome.

“Two other controls not so well known to the general public, but winch have been important ones in manufacturing, relate to the control over abrasives which has operated since 1943, and the control over zinc, which was imposed two years earlier. In the first case the supply of abrasives has improved considerably, and sponsorship is no longer necessary to secure releases from the supplying countries. The Factory Controller hasarranged for distributors of abrasives io exercise an unofficial control for a period to ensure that there is no wasteful use of these materials.

“Regarding zinc, which was one of the. first materials to become critical in supply, the position eased somewhat "a short time ago, and a relaxation control was effected, but here again it has become possible to lift entirely the control in line with stimilar action abroad.”

Mr. Sullivan added that all controls under his administration had already been very carefully considered, with a view to relaxing them. He anticipated receiving reports from several controllers indicating proposed revocation of other present restrictions. He felt it was important, however, to emphasise that many controls would have to continue for a considerable period yet.
