LATE MESSAGES

GERMAN ATROCITIES.

NEW YORK, May 10. The Office of War Information confirmed that films of the German atrocities that revolted the world, will be seen by the nation which perpetrated them, even if every German was seized by the scruff of the neck and forced to look upon the evidence. Newspapers, magazines, pictures and radio will all be marshalled to present humanity’s bill against Germany. The Office of War Information points out that the Germans have no sense of national guilt or shame for the atrocities. They do not realise that as Germans they must accept the responsibility for the contamination Hitler visited upon civilisation.

JOURNALIST’S “SCOOP”

LONDON, May 10.

It is revealed that from 4 a.m. on May 5, member newspapers of the Newspaper Proprietors Association ceased using the American Associated Press Service, and disconnected ticker equipment in their offices. The journal, World’s Press News, says it is believed that the position developed principally, but not solely, because of the lalse surrender story on April 29, which came from the American Senator Connally. This story caused a great deal of trouble in London offices.

NEW YORK, May 10

The President of the American Associated Press, Robert McLean, stated: “The American Associated Press profoundly regrets the distribution on Monday of the report of the total surrender in Europe, which investigation now clearly discloses was distributed in advance of SHAEF authorisation. The whole long honourable record of the Associated Press is based on its responsibility as to the integrity and authenticity of the news and its observance of the obligations voluntarily assumed, as appropriately affirmed by Kent. Cooper, yesterday. U.S.A. CASUALTIES. WASHINGTON, May 10.* Mr. Stimson estimated the total American Army casualties in all theatres against Germany at approximately 800.000, of whom 150,000 were killed. About half of the wounded have already returned to duty. Seventy to 80,000 American prisoners are at present returning to the American forces. Over 80,000 had already returned to the United States.
