MONTHLY MEETING.

HOKITIKA, April 19.

The Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock, presided over the following members at a meeting ,of the Hokitika Borough Council: Crs. W. H. Stopforth, S. G. Havill, S. G. Roberts, L. S. Ross, D. Pettigrew, H. C. Peart, and I. J. Preston. The Treasurer’s statement was received as follows: —Receipts: £2129 8/1; expenditure: £1763 13/4. Accounts amounting to £lOO4 17/11 were passed for payment or ratified. Abbatoirs report: Stock slaughtered for March amounted to 20 cows, 38 heifers, 43 bullocks, 255 sheep, 63 lambs, three pigs, five calves. Condemned, nil. Fees £B3 15/3 (fees collected for corresponding month last year £9l 10/9). It was decided to include Saturday in the special holiday rates of charges for digging and interments at flip epmpferv. The Westland Rugby Sub-Union wrote accepting responsibility for the care of the pavilion and other property on Cass Square, notifying the appointment of a caretaker for Saturdays, and deprecating the acts of vandalism at the Square. It was decided to ask the Harbour Board to assume responsibility for the maintenance of the danger lamps on Gibson’s Quay, between Revell and Wharf Streets.

Or. Preston seconded Cr. Peart’s motion: “That pursuant to Section 90 (1) (a) of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1933, the Hokitika Borough Council set up a special committee to enquire into, with a view to establishing, a service for the removal of all refuse from all properties in the Borough that have a building erected her-eon.”—Carried. Crs. Peart, Preston and Roberts were appointed the sub-committee, The Westland Hospital Board advised that the levy on the Council for the year would be £2956 1/6. The Westland Hospital Board advised that a vacancy had occurred for a representative on the Board and asked the Council to appoint a qualified person.—On the suggestion of the Mayor the matter was deferred to the next meeting. Air Travel (N.Z.) Ltd wrote regarding the non-renewal by the Minister of Transport of all air taxi and tourist services.—A letter of protest to be sent to Mr. O'Brien in view of the inconvenience to settlers of South Westland. The matter will also be put before the Minister of Public Works by a deputation. Air Travel is to be notified its case is supported by the Council. CORRESPONDENCE. The Treasury advised that part of the Council’s inscribed loan amounting to £1037/16/2 matured on February 1, 1945, with a consequent reduction of £lB/3/2 in the halfyearly interest charges. As a result the indebtedness of the Council in respect to inscribed loans had been reduced to £15,889/8/1, on which the half-yearly instalment of interest would be £273/1/3. The Rehabilitation Committee Greymouth, advised that with the practical merging of the Rehabilitation Committee with the Regional Council the unexpended portion of contributions made by local bodies was being refunded, the Hokitika Borough receiving a refund of £2 4/11 from the original contribution of £2/10/-. Mr T. IV. Duff was appointed to represent the Council on the Westland War Loan Committee. It was resolved that the Canterbury Employers’ Association be asked to represent the Council in negotiations in regard to the award of the local body and other labourers’ union. . Mr E. Henham, Mrs M. A. Gutberlet and Mr F. G .Oliver were granted permission to instal septic tanks subject to complinace with the Health regulations. The Westland Schools Sports Association was granted the use of Cass Square on April 27, with the right to charge adults for admittance. The Hokitika Businessmen’s Association wrote, suggesting that the Council consider suspending street lights over the centre of the streets m the business area and also doubling the number of lights; pointing out the urgency of building by-laws lor the town, and offering assistance' expressing appreciation of work done in the numbering of houses.—lt was decided that the Town Clerk enquire from the lighting company on the questions raised by the Association, and the by-laws committee was instructed to take immediate steps to frame building by-laws.
