“SPITTOON FINANCIERS.” TAIHAPE, March 23. Moving a vote of censure on the Government for its proposal to seize the Bank of New Zealand, Mr. Vivian Smith coined a new term —“spittoon financiers” —at the close of an address at Taihape by Mr. E. B. Gordon, member for Rangitikei. . Mr. Smith said that personally he thought everyone had confidence in men who had made a success of their own business. When one looked over the personnel of the Labour Party, where were such men, capable of running one of the biggest financial institutions? . , , • Mr. Semple had coined an apt phrase, “Spittoon philosophers,” and apparently now they were to have some “spittoon financiers.” Mr. Nash had been forced into a corner by one of these men who had never made a success of his own business. Mr. Gordon defended the salary increases of members of Parliament, which was part of the National Partyelection platform in 1943, he said. The National Party wondered if Mr. Fraser would “do the decent thing and ask Mr. Holland to join the New Zealand delegation at the San Francisco conference.
