FIRST PRIZE TO N. PLYMOUTH WELLINGTON, March 24. The “Victory” Art Union was drawn to-day. Following are the principal prize-winners:— First, house, £2000: 243360, A. M. Street, Awart Road, New Plymouth. Second, car, £550: A 67953, Mrs G. James, Ngai Valley. Third, car, £350: 8159,995, H Searle, 113 Eye Street, Invercargill. Fourth, c ash order for £200: 134834: Mrs J. Stuck, 71 Roxburgh Street, Wellington. Fifth, frigidaire, £150: C 208819, M. Mackie, 1306 Karamu Street, Hastings. Sixth., furniture, £105: A 208210 M. Ross, 7a Freyberg Street, LyaL Bay. Seventh, cash order for £loo’ 237348. “Stuff,” Otorohanga. Mr F. P. Walsh, president of. the Wellington Trades Council, which sponsored the art union, said that over 100,000 tickets were sold and not- a penny was paid in commission. Although internal civil air transport operations have not yet regained the proportions of pre-war years, the returns for 1944 published in the Abstract of Statistics reveal considerable gains under all headings as compared with recent years. Overseas services in 1944 also produced substantial increases, and passengers and freight carried reached the highest total to date. A total of 50,069 passengers was carried by internal services last year, compared with 32,997 in the previous year. The miles flown totalled 957,210. Freight increased from 174,4861 b in 1943 to 252,4861 b last year. In overseas services 5345 passengers were carried last year, compared with 2615 in the previous year. The freight carried, 79,5731 b, was more than double that of 1943. Totals of 2566 hours and 391,280 miles were flown last year, in comparison with 1392 hours and 211,720 miles in the previous year.
