MONTHLY MEETING

HOKITIKA, March 22. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening, .the Mayor, Mr A. R; Elcock, presiding. The following were present:—Crs. D. Pettigrew, H. C. Peart, L. S. Pmss,. S. G. Havill, A. C. Armstrong and S. G. Roberts. Financial statement. Receipts £O2B/1/1; expenditure £1585/14/3 Accounts ahiounting to £758/15/5 were passed for payment. The Foreman’s report was approved. The sextori Reported 10 imerinents during February. Abattoir report.—Stock slaughtered for month of February arnounted to .10, cows, 43 heifers, 49 bullocks, 217 sheep,,62 lahibs, 2 pigs, 5 calves; condemned, nil. Eees lor the month amounted to £BO/8/1. Fees for the corresponding month last year £9O 18/1. . It was resolved to continue the arrangements with the Country Library Service for a further period at a cost of £260 a year. ' CORRESPONDENCE

John Cameron, Revell Street, application lor consent to the suodivisioh of sections 741, 742, and part section 740, and 321, Town of Hokitika, and asking the Council to exempt this subdivision from the provisions of section 128 of the .Public Works Act, 1928, as part of Revell Street is less than the statutory width.—Granted. D. H. Thomas and V. Pierson asked that the portion of Jellie Street fronting their residence in South Jollie Street be gravelled, as much inconvenience is caused by surface water after heavy rain.—Left tc Overseer.

The Medical Superintendent of the Mental Hospital wrote regarding maintenance of Cemetery Road. —Referred to the Clerk to conclude arrangement. The Resident Engineer New Zealand Railways, Greymouth, wrote advising that the matter of providing automatic warning devices at Park Street and Tudor Street railway crossings and also at other crossings at Hokitika had been reviewed from time to time, but that it is not considered the installation of warning signals at any of these crossings is justified until more dangerous crossings elsewhere are equipped. Prom Secretary of . west Cop.sl Branch of "the Automobile Association, Greymouth, advising that many complaints are being made to the Association in regard to the potholes in streets in the Borough and must require urgent attention. In particular, the Weld Street crossing is a danger to motorists and cyclists in its present condition.—Referred tc the overseer for attention. Mr W. F. Kean, Revell Street asked that attention be given tc Revell Street between Park street and the north boundary, us the street in its present condition is unusable by cycle or motor traffic. —Referred to overseer„ . Mr N. E. Schroder, 121 Jollie Street, asked that the footpath on the west side of Jollie Street, between Hampden and Park Streets be placed in a satisfactory condition, and also that the over-grown drain be cleaned out.—Referred tc overseer. Mrs Janet Chesterman. .Hampden Street, applied for permission to instal a septic tank on section 173 u Hampden Street. —Granted. Cr. C. Caliari tendered an apology for absence through illness. He also stated that he learnt that the Westland Hospital Board levy on the Hokitika Borough Council Hor the year 1945-46 will show an increase of approximately .£6OO, and if that is correct he definitely opposes the increase and recommends the Council to pay the same rate as last yetir hospital levy and to repudiate the extra levy.—Leave granted. The rest of the letter was deferred. Mr E. W. Heenan, Chairman of the Hospital Board, was in attendance, and explained to the Council the reason for the increase, and promised to bring before the Board a suggestion to relieve the ratepayers by raising a loan. Mr Havill moved and Mr Ross seconded, a motion to call a meeting of the local bodies concerned before the next meeting of the Hospital. Board. WATER SUPPLY Report of the Chairman of Works, Cr. S. G. Havill, on the water supply from Lake Kanieri: —After visiting sections of the old line to the lake, we find the pipes in a bad state ol repair, the wire bindings being practically corroded away. This is also borne out by the Foreman, who states that he finds a most difficultjob to carry out even temporary repairs. After considering Mr R. A. Campbell’s report, we recommend that it should be acted upon and for this purpose we select his No. 2 scheme as the most sunable, this providing for a delivery into the reservoir of approximately 280 gallons per minute. The cost ox this scheme would considerably exceed the engineer’s estimate, which was assessed in 1935 at approximately £16.000. .We further recommend that the line of the diversion of the proposed new line, referred to in Mr Campbell’s report, from approximately Ward Rouci, to the site of Hackill’s old mill at Coal Creek, be again cleared and a survey made of the whole job, with a view to having this urgent work commenced as soon as labour and material are available. —Arrangements to be made for the line to be cleared preparatory to a survey being made. ■ The committee to investigatae unpaid rates recommended that in a number of cases, the rates should he sued for, and in the case of nonpayment the sections would be sola by the Council.—The recommendation was adopted. It was poi.rited out that a number of these sections had been required for building purposes, but the owners could not be found.
