RACING AND TROTTING

MEETINGS TO GOME. March 24: ManaxWu.. , i March 24: Waimate. March 24: Bay of Plenty. March 31, April 2: Auckland. TROTTING. Mar<?h 24, 31: Metropolitan. March 31: Hawera. . ManawatA Scratchings: Scratchings for the Manawatu races are: King George Handicap: Longsword. Kairanga Hurdles: Star Peer. Adderstone Handicap: Blanket. —P.A. Retired to Stud: The successful performer, Te Hinemoa, has been retired from racing, and is to go to the stud next season. Te Hinemoa is the last of a line of good winners from Prodice, who died in 1939. Prodice was by Catmint from Hyades, by Hymettus, from Straga, by Birkenhead from Witchet, by Sir Lancelot. Besides Te Hinemoa, Prodice also produced Callisto, Gallio, and Te Hero. Te Hinemoa has won £3BOO in stakes this season.

For Auckland: Deprive and Riverview will compete at the A.R.C. Easter meeting. Deprive was not entered for the Champagne Stakes in which the stable will be represented by Riverview- The lastnamed was favourite for the Plunket Nursery at Trentham, but he was never prominent. He was off colour for about two weeks prior to the meeting, and probably was a little short of seasoned condition. He should be a fitter horse at Ellerslie.

11l Fortune: Flying Ace, winner of the Thompson Handicap in 1944, went very close to winning the event again last Saturday. He was prominent among the first half-dozen all the way, but the fortunes of the rtinning went against him and his winning chance was affected through his being forced to cover extra ground on the turn. To fail by two short heads was an excellent performance.

Unlucky: Two unlucky runners among the juveniles at Paeroa last Saturday were Gay Star and Perdition. The latter was restless at the barrier, and in consequence conceded the field a start,, so that his fifth, four heads away from the winner, was not a bad effort, and suggested early improvement. Gay Star was always prominent, and in a tight finish was squeezed for room. Both these youngsters should improve.

Encouraging: Having his first race over fences, Spirillum .was responsible for an encouraging performance when he finished second to Gayjax in the Handicap Hurdles at the Ohinemuri meeting. Spirillum lost a lot of ground at the start, otherwise he may have won. Spirillam put in his best work from the half-mile post and finished solidly. He is a four-year-old by Spiral from Imposture and is inbred to Limond, a grandson of St. Simon.

First Race: While form among the 60-odd maidens engaged at Paeroa last Saturday appeared to be at a discount, the running suggested that there were a few who may yet make good. One of these is Land Warden, who finished strongly to get in the money in the third division. He is an upstanding chestnut, a half-brother by Lord Warden to the brilliant Llangollen and the not-so-brilliant Llandine, Kilberis and Clarus. A four-year-old, this was Land Warden’s first race.

Good Looker: If looks count for anything, the two-year-old Nanakea should go a long way. This filly was having her first race when she lined, up at Paeroa, and after being slow away she finished very strongly in fourth place in her division, beaten three heads. She is by the Well-bred Te Hero, and is a half-sister to those fine gallopers Neenah, Namakia, and Suleiman; she may live right up to this breeding.

Bracketed: The following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator at Addington to-morrow: Preliminary Handicap: Nola Scott and Scottish Emperor. Express Handicap: Follow Me and Loyal King, In the Mood and Warform. Easter Handicap: Special Edition and Joan Conquest. Craven Handicap: Certainty and Dundee Sandy, Golden Shadow and Poppotunoa. Welcome Handicap: Democrat and Sprayman, Globe Direct and Jacqueline. Flyin? Handicap: Betty Boop and In the Iviood. Claremorris and Sea Born, Parish Lad and Clockwork, Bronze Eagle and Pacing Power.

A Sidelight: An interesting sidelight on the controversy.aroused by tlie sweeping condemnation of New Zealand bloodstock by Mr Sol Green following his recent brief visit to New Zealand, is provided by the complete returns for the .1945 national yearling sales, which show that Mr Green’s countrymen do not generally share his opinion. Commissioners for Australian buyers purchased 30 lots at auction at an aggregate of wore than This is the highest number of yearlings purchased by Australians in any year since the commencement ot the sales 19 years ago and the aggi<gate is also a record figure.

Loyal Friend in Form: .Double Peter left the two-mile post two seconds in front of Betty Boop and .had four seconds start from Loyal Friend and Syncopate at Addington yesterday. Double Peter got to the halfmile post in 1.8 2-5, the mile m 2.15 2-5, the mile and a-half in 3.23 Z-a, and the mile and three-quarters in 3 55 2-5. Once in line for home Betty Boop and Loyal Friend moved up to challenge Double Peter. The three horses finished in great style, Double Peter winning by a neck from Betty Boop with Loyal Friend almost ( on terms with Betty Boop. Syncopate was six lengths away. Double Peter registered 4.26 2-5 for the two nriles. Betty Boop did 4.24 3-5, and Loyal Friend 4.22 3-5. These three pacers did the most impressive trials. TROTTING AT ADDINGTON. The Earl of Rosebery, president, of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, at its annual meeting here tonight, urged the Government to free the racing industry of its shackles so that it could contribute to Britain s export effort. , . “We have not had a Cabinet Minister on a racecourse since the war, he said. “I would like one to come to a meeting here, preferably the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir John Anderson. We read in every paper and in most political speeches that this country must increase its export trade Bloodstock can be obtained nowhere else in such excellence as m these islands. India. Australia, New Zealand. South America and North America are all wanting our thoiouglibreds. But I would like to give this warning, that if they cannot buy the best they will go elsewhere for the second-best. That is why I should like the help of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Once people get accustomed to the second-best we may lose these markets for good. Before the war we exported over 1,000 animals a year. More inquiries are coming in now than ever before. But these animals have to be proved on the racecourse before sale.” , , Turning to the problems of breeders during the war, Lord Rosebery Sa *AVe have been at our wits encl to keep our stud farms going. The fine old pasture so necessary for horse breeding will not be right for years to come. Labour is a problem on the stud and in the racing stable. For instance, the lad who has done Ocean Swell (1944 Derby winner) ever since he went into training is 73. There is another lad in the same yard who did Cyllene 47 years ago.” Incidentally, he revealed a fact about Ocean Swell, this year s Derby winner, that will interest thoroughbreeders —lie was a 12 months foal. His dam carried him exactly one month over her time, a very unusual occurrence.
