DOMINION ITEMS

ALLEGED THEFT AUCKLAND, Feb. 19.

About £ 1600 is involved in a series of charges preferred against William Henry Mervyn Adams, law clerk and former solicitor, before Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court this morning. Adams pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing £B2, the property of the legal firm of Russell, Me— Veagh and Co., between May 14, 1942 and January 5, 1944, and of failing to account for various sums ranging from £l2 to £329, received in connection with deceased estates. Accused also denied alternative charges of having stolen the various sums referred to.

Outlining the case for the prosecution, Mr. V. R. Meredith said that Adams was formerly in practice as a solicitor and was given a position as a law clerk in the office of Russell, McVeagh and Co. It was alleged that accused stole steadily almost from the time he started with the firm. The firm had had to make good the sum of £l6OO.

The hearing of evidence is likely to occupy several days.
