CHESS TOURNAMENT

SECOND ROUND RESULTS. AUCKLAND, December 27k The second round of the New Zealand Chess Congress was played today with the following results: — Miss Meyer v. Wade (Queen’s pawn, Vienna variation). Wade won a rook at move 26, which resulted in the resignation of Miss Meyer five moves later. Lepviikman v. Webling (Dutch defence). Lepviikman won a piece in the middle gamq, and scored, a victory at move 61. Moir v. Adkins (French defence). An even game up to the forty-first move, when Adkins went astray in a “drawish” ending, allowing white to win pawn and exchange rook. Adkins resigned at move> 50. McSherry v. Stewart (Ruy Lopez). McSherry claimed a draw at the 14th move on account of Stewart making the same move three times. A draw was upheld by the umpire, thus ending an unusual game. A. L. Fletcher v. Kelling (Queen’s gambit declined). In the middle game Fletcher won a bishop for a pawn, Kelling resigning on the 49th move. Belton v. Reindler (Caro Kann defence). This game was adjourned after even competition. , In an adjourned game in the first championship round, Moir defeated A. L. Fletcher after an interesting end game. , . In the major open competition, first round adjourned games resulted as follows: —There was a draw between Pearse (Timaru) and Leon Sim (Palmerston North). H. Christensen (Palmerston North) defeated N. Watt (Auckland). In the second round, Sim beat Watt; Pearse beat Summers; R. Christensen beat Godteschalk; Richards drew with Mrs. Short; Henderson drew with Miss Hollis; and H. Christensen drew with N. T. Fletcher.
