In a highly exciting finish, which redeemed an otherwise drab batting display, Auckland beat Wellington in a representative cricket match today, by five wickets, scoring the winning run off the last ball of the day. CHRISTCHURCH, December 26. Canterbury beat Otago by an innings and 17 runs in a representative cricket match. Otago made 66 in the .rest innings, and Canterbury 262. Otago’s second innings closed for 179. Though more confident at times, Otago again began badly in the second innings this morning, when conditions were cool, but favourable to good cricket. Five leading batsmen were out for 66 runs. Only Toomey (captain) and Roberts were able to hit confidently at the Canterbury bowling. Toomey reached 39, including four boundaries, before being bowled by Scott. A little later Freeman was stumped after making 15. Roberts had passed 30 at this stage and was exploiting his powerful ch’ive. Roberts was unbeaten at hmen with 70 to his credit. Scores:— Otago Second Innings—Murdoch, run out 4; Toomey, b.
