REMARKABLE NEW DRUG
LONDON, December 1. An article in. the “Lancet” announces the discovery of “Gramacidin S” the latest member of a group of Chemotherapeutic drugs, with a remarkable power for attacking bacteria. The drug is a product of soil bacillus and has been prepared in pure crustaline form. It has a striking action against many bacteria, including
some which are not attacked by penicillin. Local applications of Gramacidin S to gunshot wounds in Russian hospitals have produced rapid healing. even in cases of long-standing suppuration.
Ten years ago a Carlisle doctor applied a compress of sodium bicarbonate to a rodent ulcer—a form of skin cancer—in order to clean it up before making his final diagnosis. To the doctor’s surprise the ulcer disappeared. The “Lancet” recounts the doctor’s further experiences with this simple remedy, including his curing of eight out of 16 cases 'of skin cancer. No explanation is offered.
