MONTHLY MEETING

HOKITIKA, December 14. The Hokitika Borough Council met ■yesterday. The Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock presided, and the following members were present: Crs. A. C. Armstrong, L. S. Ross, C. Caliari, H, C. Pearl, D. Pettigrew'. I. J. Prc-ston. S. G. Havill. .
Treasurer's; statement: Receipts. £847/2/5; expenditure £913/19/’. Account,?, amounting to £lB7O/9/3 were passed for payment. Abattoir report,- Stock slaughtered for month of November amounted to 12 cows, 12 heifers, 66 bullocks, 130 sheep, four iambs, Jive pigs, calves ml. Condemned, nil. Fees collected for the month amounted to £7B/11/-; fees for corresponding month last year. £BO/17/3. The Foreman’s report was read and approved. The Sexton reported nine interments, for November. After considerable .discussion it was decided that the members of the Reserves Committee meet representatives of the Westland County i Council with a view to arranging an increased subsidy, preferably a 50-50 contribution. Tt was pointed out that the County paid only ,£5O per year towards the cost of maintaining the cemetery, although about 54 per .cent, of those buried there came from the County. The Cemetery Account showed a loss of about £3OO per year to the Borough. A notice of motion by Cr. Peart to establish a regular rubbish collection from all buildings in the Borough had no seconder. The Chairman of the Works Committee, Cr. Havill reported on a proposal to lay and pipe the drains in -Brittan Street and recommended a commencement being made with the work. The report was adopted' and a survey made. A resolution setting out the conditions for picnic parties on Cass Square was ratified. It was decided to remove the barbed wire from the Cabs Square gates just before
Christmas. The Mayor expressed the hope that the public would have learnt a lesson and, that it would not be necessary to replace the wire. It was decided to arrange for the painting of the Pavilion at Cass Square. It was resolved to register and license all eating houses in the Borough as from January 1 next,
