HOKITIKA NOTES

HOKITIKA, November 9. An interesting ceremony took place yesterday afternoon at the Infant School, Park Street, on the occasion of the opening of the school baths. The Chairman, Mr A. C. Armstrong, gave the history of the bath which had been financed by the Hokitika District High School Jubilee Committee from surplus funds and subsidised by the Government. Other speakers were Mr S. Stephens. (Rector), Mr S. J. Irwin (Senior Inspector of Schools), Mr F. L. Turley (member of the Canterbury Education Board), who donated a medal for the most improved swimmer in Standards I. and II and under, Mr A. E. Lawrence (member of the Canterbury Education Board), the Mayor (Mr A. R. Elcock), and Miss M. Haliday (secretary of Jubilee Committee), who declared the baths open. Items Avere provided by various pupils of the District High School, the visitors being entertained to afternoon tea.

At the monthly meeting of the Businessmen’s Association last evening, correspondence from various Ministers of the CroAvn dealing with the suggestion to have Lake Mahinapua investigated as a possible harbour site Avas read. A letter from the Food Controller again declining a bacon-curing license to a returned soldier was received. Comment was made on the action of a number of Avhitebaiters who during the recent glut, and knoAving the bait could not be disposed of, deliberately Avasted considerable quantities. A letter is to be sent to the Borough Council pointing out that other places had received substantial subsidies from the Government towards the installation of sewerage systems. Mr. H. C. Peart, a member of the Hokitika Fire Board, presented service honours to the following members of the Hokitika Fire Brigade at an evening social: Foreman C. B. Ross (37 years’ service) and Foreman F. Groufsky (29 years’ service), two years’ gold bar; Fireman F. Groufsky, jun., silver medal for five years’ service; Foreman M. M. Davidson (13 years’ service), Foreman R. Roberts (17 years’ service), Firemen J. M. Butland (17 years’ service), J. J. Mclntosh (23 years’ service), E. Lakin (15 years’ service), and F. Groufsky, jun. (seven years’ service), two-years’ silver bars. Fireman W. Thompson has gained the gold star for 25 years’ service. This will be presented at the New Zealand conference to be held at Westport next year.
