RACING AND TROTTING

MEETINGS TO COME. November 11: Napier Park. November 11: Avondale.

TROTTING.

Nov. 11:—Metropolitan.

Rider for Cup: L. J. Clutterbuck has been engaged to ride Patu Po in the New Zealand Cup.

Coming Back: C. S. Donald apparently has Paul Collette racing solidly, and if he can be depended upon to repeat his performance of Saturday last, when he ran a good third behind Gold Peg and Lady Moness, he should not be hard to place.

Extra Day: The Westport Trotting Club will .have two days’ racing at Chistmas as a result of a successful application by the Club for one of the three additional trotting permits recently granted. An application by the Greymouth Trotting Club for an extra day was refused.

Traverse Again: Traverse will be in demand again on Saturday next when he contests the Le Lievre Handicap of two miles from the limit mark. This brilliant pacer has had a phenomenal run recently and there are good judges who say he will not stop winning until he reaches the top of the tree.

M. Caddy as Trainer: The former Riccarton horseman, M. Caddy, who injured a leg in a race accident in March, 1943, was a spectator at the Wellington meeting. It is feared that the injury will prevent his returning to the saddle, and in all probability he will take steps in the near future to set up as a trainer.

Finished Well: Watcher made an impression with his finishing run into third place from the back of the field in the Canterbury Handicap on Saturday last. He is off the front of the William Hayward Handicap of two miles on Saturday next, meeting Light Brigade on level terms, after conceding him 48 yards last week, and will be more solidly supported than he was last Saturday.

Enforced Let-up: The New Zealand Cup candidate Fair Trial is on the injured list at present. The Solicitor General gelding is suffering from a festered foot as the result of shoeing trouble. It is unfortunate that this should happen when he was going on so well in his preparation for the New Zealand Cup, for which his chances are favoured in many quarters.

A Champion: Blue Horizon won the Christchurch Trotting Stakes in the manner of a champion at Addington on Saturday and this, coming on top of his victory agairfct a useful field of pacers at Oamaru, and coupled with the start he will receive, will probably make him favourite against Royal Worthy on Saturday next. Blue Horizon did not win by a big margin, but he was confidently driven and could have increased the margin had his driver so wished.

Surprising Price: To South Island racegoers the certainty of the day at Napier Park was Findon in the seven furlongs event. He duly won by two lengths, but the surprising part about his win was the fact that he was only second choice on each machine. Provided he can be kept sound this horse will reach the top, and his connections make no secret of their faith in his ability.

Out of Hacks: The brilliant Reorapa is now out of hacks as a result of his win at Greenmeadows on Saturday. He has been a difficult horse to keep on a straight path, otherwise he would have been out of this class before Saturday. The fact that he will have to race against the open handicappers should not stop him for some time as he has brilliant speed and premises to stay well.

Poor Showing: Slavonic’s dismal showing in the Metropolitan Challenge Stakes gave a jolt to his Derby admirers. He will no doubt still be favourite, because his performance on Saturday was too bad to be true.. With a filly like Bexley’s Pride engaged in the Derby, however, Slavonic cannot now be regarded as holding something of a mortgage on the race.

Melbourne Cup Betting: Cream Puff was recently supported for £40,000 for the Melbourne Cup. Bookmakers laid attractive odds as an inducement to the connections of Cre am Puff to tackle the race and so furnish additional opposition to Lawrence, Claudette ,and others, who have been coupled for fortunes with the Caulfield Cup winner, Counsel.

Brilliant Run: Forewarned put in a sensational run over the last half of the Christchurch Trotting Stakes at Addington on Saturday, but he was too fax- back early to have a chance of beating Blue Horizon. Forewarned is a fine trotter, with a great fund of speed, but there is an impression that he does not relish the longer journeys. He is engaged over a mile and five furlongs on Saturday next at Addington, and despite the presence of the already proved champions will carry a lot of support.

Coming Cup Horse: Light Brigade proved himself a good stayer when he won the Canterbury Handicap at Addington on Saturday. This American-bred stallion looks every inch a champion in action and he is headed for the best classes. He will be more severely tested on Saturday next, when he will meet pacers of the calibre of Watcher (on even terms), Sea Born, Lady Dawn, Trusty Scott, Hilda Potts and Parrish Lad. However, he will still be one of the favourites.

Fifth Australian: G. B. Noble, who drove Bronze Eagle to win the Trotting Cup, is ' the fifth Australian reinsman to win the race. C. H. Piper drove St. Simon when he won in 1902, A. Millson won with Belmont in 1906, P. Riddle with Sheik in 1924, and J. J. Kennerley with Peter Bingen in 1928 and 1929. Australian! horses that have won include St. Simon, Birchmark, Belmont, Adelaide Direct, and Sheik, and Americanbred winners are Trix Pointer and Josedale Grattan.

Staying Bred: Capronella, as a result of her clear-cut win in the principal event at Greenmeadows on Saturday . will come into favour as a light-weight chance in the New Zealand Cup. She has only 7.0, but is liable to a re-handicap. Capronella is by Kincardine, sire also of the champion Kindergarten and Glenfalloch. from the Weathervane mare, Vanestep. Vanestep was from Warstep by Martian from Pibroch by Lochiel, so on breeding there is everything to suggest that Capronella will see out a two miles journey. .

Jockey Retires: The Trentham trainer P. Burgess has handed in his jockey’s license and in future will confine his activities to training. He will also figure as an owner, having acquired a half-interest in the Parliamentary Handicap winner Flahuluk and the St. Boswells—Red Shoes two-year-old Dainty Shoes. Burgess had a successful career as a jockey. He rode 250 winners on the flat and over hurdles and country, his best season being in 1936-37 with 42 wins.

' Tote Record at Addington: The record sum of £154,064/10/- handled by the totalisator staff at Addington on Saturday was made up of 182,623

10/- tickets, 33,748 £1 tickets, and 5801 £5 tickets. The 10/- tickets accounted for no less than 82.2 per cent, of the total, the £1 tickets for 15.2 per. cent., and the remaining 2.6 per cent., was in £5 tickets. The record sum of £31,758 invested on the Cup consisted of 38,006 10/- tickets, or 82.6 per cent, of the total, 6795 £1 tickets, representing 14.8 per cent, of the total, and 1192 £5 tickets or only 2.6 per cent., of the total.
