LORD MOYNE SHOT

ASSASSINATION AT CAIRO (Rec. 10 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 6: Lord Moyne was seriously wounded in an attempt against his life in Cairo, Reuter’s correspondent in Cairo says that Lord Moyne was returning from his office to his residence for luncheon, and was stepping down from his car when two men fired revolvers. An Egyptian constable shot and wounded one assailant running away. Both assailants were arrested. Lord Moyne was taken to hospital. POLICE CHASE SUCCEEDS

RUGBY, Nov. 6. Details of the attempt on Lord Moyne were given by a po.lice official, who is conducting an inquiry, says a Cairo correspondent. The assailants were in a car when they emptied their revolvers at Lord Moyne’s, car. They immediately fled, but military police on motor-cycles chased them, and were fired on by the assailants. The police returned the fire and shot one. They finally caught up with the car and arrested the other.

LATER Lord Moyne has died in Cairo.

CHAUFFEUR ALSO KILLED ,

(Recd. 2 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 6. Lord Moyne died in hospital about an hour alter an operation for removal of the bullets from the throat and stomach, says the Associated Press Cairo correspondent. Lord Moyne under a stream of bullets, had fallen wounded near the steps leading to his house, while the chauffeur collapsed over the driving wheel. He was apparently killed instantly. The Egyptian Government denied the assailants were Egyptians. An official inquiry indicated that the assailants watched Lord Moyne’s residence for several days and apparently succeeded in entering the ground last-night or this morning. It is considered that the attack has a political basis.

The “Daily Telegraph’s” Cairo correspondent says: The assailants, who are both young, tried to make off on bicycles after the attack. An Egyptian constable challenged them and when they fired at him, he fired eight, shots back wounding one in the groin. The driver of a British military ambulance, who saw shooting, blocked the road with his vehicle and thus prevented the escape of - the uninjured assailant. The enraged crowd pounced on the injured man, while farther down the street, more people seized the other man. Both were stripped of their clothing. The police arrived just in time to prevent lynching. The policeman who arrested the assailant has been recommended for promotion and rewarded. JEWS RESPONSIBLE (Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 6. Lord Moyne was thrice wounded in the abdomen, chest and neck. He died at the British military hospital. A Cairo bulletin issued shortly before his death said: “His condition is very grave despite treatment by blood transfusion and penicillin. Lord Moyne was operated on and a bullet extracted from the abdomen. The chest wound was only superficial, but the neck wound involved the spine, and it was not considered advisable to remove the bullet which, however was located.” Lord Moyne’s assassins were Jews, according to General Sir Bernard Paget, Commander-in-Chief of the Middle East. He said: “In Lord Moyne’s tragic death and at the hands of Jewish assassins, the British Em-j pire lost a great public servant.”

Walter Edward Guinness, first Baron Moyne, was born in 1880. He was educated at Eton and was captain of the boats. He entered the Commons as a Conservative and filled Ministerial positions, and later was appointed British Minister at Cairo. He was a son of the Earl Iveagh, and was given a peerage in 1932.
