FUNERAL OF MR. RATANA.
WANGANUI, November 3. In the presence of 1200 persons, the majority of them Maoris, the late H. T. Ratana, M.P. for the Western Maori electorate, was buried to-day at Ratana pa. The funeral was attended by a Ministerial party, which included Mr. Fraser, Mr. Nash, Mr. Jones, Mr. Mason. The Opposition was represented by the deputy-leader (Mr. Polson). Mr. James Roberts, president of the Labour Party, and the three other Maori members of the House of Representatives, and Hon. R. Mawhete, were present, with Messrs Cotterill and Hodgens, members of Parliament for Wanganui and Palmerston North respectively. A typical Maori ceremony marked the display of grief at the leader’s passing. A women’s choir sang as the cortege wended its way from the house to the temple, outside which there was an appropriate service. The Ministerial party received a welcome in the typical native fashion, which was enhanced by the presence of the Ratana Brass Band.
