CONFERENCE OPENS.

WELLINGTON, November 1. The following official statement was issued by the joint secretariat of the Australian-New Zealand confeience at the conclusion of to-day s proceedingsi—• “The Australian-New Zealand conference was opened this morning with an informal welcome to the Australian delegation, at which, in addition to members of the New Zealand Cabinet, the High Commissioners for the United Kingdom (Sir Harry Batterbee) and Canada (Dr. W. A. Riddell were also present. Following tms mfoimaJ gathering, the delegations of the Commonwealth and the Dominion proceeded to a discussion on an agenaa for the conference. The remainder of the morning session was devoted to a general survey of the international situation. The conference adjourned at 12.45 p.m. and resumed at 3 p.m. ' , X, • “Among the subjects covered this afternoon were the following: (1) world organisation; (2) Pacific questions, with particular reference to the welfare of native peoples; (3) views on post-hostilities arrangements: (4) the Australian-’New Zealand approach to international economic questions. Substantial progress was made on all points. Several matters were referred to officials of the two delegations* for discussion on points of detail, and the conclusions will be reported back to the full conference to-morrow.
