OPERATIONS IN BURMA
(Rec. 10.30 a.m.) KANDY, Oct. 30. Allied troops in North Burma have begun a new two-pronged drive into Japanese-held territory, and have made important advances. Chinese troops advanced 57- miles along the Myitkyina-Bhamo Road to capture Myuthit. Coinciding with the Chinese advance, troops of the British 36th Division have driven south-west along the Mogaung-Mandalay railway, which is about 50 miles west of the Myitkyina-Bhamo Road. The British have advanced 36 miles towards the Katha railway junction, 90 miles south-west of Myitkyina. They are meeting with strong enemy resistance. Nearly 2000 square miles of Northern Burma haye already been freed of the Japanese.
