RACING AND TROTTING

meetings to come.

November 4: Napier Park. November 11: Napier Park. November 11: Avondale.

trotting.

Nov. 4:—-Metropolitan. Nov. 11:— Metropolitan,

Gold Nugget: Mr. D. R. Dowell, oi Greymouth, has again presented, for the driver of the New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, a gold nugget mounted on a tiepin. A similar trophy has been presented by Mr. Dowell for the past three years, and O. E. Hooper (with' Haughty) has won two of them.

Wei I-related: There is some excellent breeding in the lines of Navy Queen, a winner at Rangiora on Labour Day. By Grattan Loyal from Oxford Queen, she goes back in the direct maternal line to Vanquish, ancestress of the champion trotting mare Worthy Queen, 2.3 3-5, and many other good winners. Navy Queen is owned by Mr. G. S. McGallon, formerly of Greymouth, and is trained at Chertsey by C.. K. Yeatman who formerly trained at Greymouth.

Death of Jewel Pointer: Mr. W. T. Lowe reports the death of Jewel Pointer, one of the greatest pacers of his clay. Mr. J. S. Shaw, who trained and drove Jewel Pointer in most of his successes, still regards the little brown stallion as the best all-rounder he ever had anything to do with. Jewel Pointer was good in saddle or harness. He won £9075 in stakes, and one of his notable feats was to win three £lOOO events in succession and all within the space of eight days.. Jewel Pointer raced from three years to 13 years without a season off. He contested 151 races for 16 wins, 23 seconds, 14 thirds, and five fourths that carried prize money. The best horse he sired was Great Jewel, who was the leading stake-winner in the 1939-40 season with £3OOO.

Big Bettors: Stories are being printed regarding the magnitude of the betting operations of the late Mr. Eric Connolly. Like many of his predecessors, the Victorian punter-owner-trainer won some big sums, particularly on Rostrum and Murillo, on one occasion collecting about £30,000 over a big double. Neither Connolly nor any other Australian plunger ever wagered such large sums as Michael Pitt, known as the Colossus punter. On the last day of the 1943-44 season his luck was consistently bad, and his losses must have run Into five figures. Pitt evened the score last month by backing six winners in six races. In one race he invested about £l2OO on a favourite, and as a saver took £lOOO to £l4O about another runner. Challenged by a bookmaker, he took this bet three times and, although the favourite failed, he finished more than £2OOO up on the race. Pitt gained the title “Colossus” by backing the horse of that, name to win £7OOO in the 1943 Melbourne Cup. Before the meeting concluded Tie ran his winnings up to £30,000, and since then he has put all other punters, past or present, in the shade.
