COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING

Bissett thanked the Council . for the grant of three months’ salary . as retiring allowance. 1 Cr, McGregor moved that Mr D. Pahckhurst be asked to report on the town water supply from Aulds Creek to reservoir’s intakes. No action was taken to buy the grader on offer at South Westland. Cr. Blackadder moved and Cr. Coghlan seconded, that the Public Works Department be asked to complete the widening of the Reef tonMaruia Road. —Carried. It was decided to buy Health stamps to the value of £5. Cr. Williams moved and Cr. Blackadder seconded, that the coal mine owners be asked to pay a royalty of 3d per ton on all coal carried over County roads other than highways.— Carried. The Chairman moved and Cr. McGregor seconded, that a royalty of 3d per ton be charged on all timber lorired over rhe roads of the County. —Lost. The Engineer was instructed to gather evidence as to the damage being done to County drains by coal mines on the terrace, Reefton, and to consult with a solicitor on the matter when such evidence is available. The Engineer is to proceed with the preliminary work of rebuilding Coal Creek bridge, Landing. The road on the west bank of the Maruia River is to be regraded. HOSPITAL’BOARD MEETING The monthly meeting of the Inangahua Hospital Board was held on Thursday. Present: Mr. J. B. Auld (chairman), Mrs. R. Yellowees, Messrs A. Topp, J. McGregor, J. Coghlan, F. W. Archer. The Chairman reported that the Loans Board had asked for full details of the construction materials of the proposed new hospital, and Mr. Trengrove the Board’s architect had been requested to supply details of the plans to the Board. Mr. Archer reported that Mr. J. W. Osborne, Reefton, .had made a substantial donation to the motor ambulance, and a resolution was passed expressing the thanks of the board to Mr. Osborne.

The Hospital Boards’ Association advised the holding of the Hospital Boards’ Conference at Wellington in February 1945. The Chairman was appointed the Board’s representative. The Reefton Unit W.W.S.A. forwarded payment of £l2/1/- being proceeds of ball organised by them for the local ambulance fund.

Members paid a tribute to the work of Commander C. H. Kearsley of the Canterbury Order of St. John who had been responsible for much work in connection with the building and equipping of the motor ambulance. Mr. Clayton moved, Mr. Topp seconded that a letter of thanks be sent from the Board to Commander Kearsley for his work and help with the new motor ambulance. The chairman said that Mr. Archer had also done much work in connection with the ambulance; he moved that a record of the work of Mr. Arcner in this connection be placed on the minutes. Seconded by Mrs. Yellowees and carried. Nurse Nolan forwarded her resignation. This was received with regret. The Minister of Health advised receipt of the Board’s resolution concerning the payments made to miners phthisis pensioners who are inmates of hospitals. The Department of Health asked what work the Board contemplated during the next five years and asked that the Minister of Works be advised of any building to be done so that this may be included in the five year plan.—The Minister to be advised of the proposal to build a new hospital at Reefton.

The Department of Health forwarded approval for overdraft of £lOOO for the December period. Mr. Coghlan said that country residents who received supply of medicines from chemists by post had to pay double postage on same. He moved that it be a recommendation to the Department of Health that medicine forwarded by post to country residents be forwarded postage paid. Seconded by Mr. McGregor and carried.

Mr. Archer moved, Mrs. Yellowees seconded that the Board purchase £4 worth of Health stamps.—Carried. Cr. Coghlan for the visiting committee reported that the coal storage accommodation needed improvement. Dr. Wicken reported: Admitted 46, discharged 49, died 1. X-rays 14, births 4, outpatients 25, in-patients 35.
