RACING AND TROTTING

TROTTING.

Oct. 28:— Invercargill. Nov. 4: —Metropolitan. Nov. 11;—-Metropolitan.

Best Not Seen: The best was not seen at Trentham of the Wanganui Guineas winner Alright. His extremely long stride was not suited by the holding ground, and it is unlikely that he will ever be seen in a true light on anything but firm going, and his Trentham performances can be dismissed. Attractive Trial: Burt Scott showed that he is as fit as ever he has been in a trial over a mile and a-half at Addington yesterday. He ran the distance in 3.14 2-5, with the first half in 1.4 3-5, the mile in 2.10, and the mile and a-quarter in 2.43. He was two carts out from the inside rail all the way. Jockey’s Appeal: J. A. McFarlane has lodged an appeal to the New Zealand Racing Conference against the decision of the Wellington District Committee, which dismissed his appeal from six months’ disqualification imposed on him by the judicial committee of the Otaki Maori Racing Club in connection with the running of Caithness, ridden by McFarlane, in the Ling Memorial Handicap at Otaki on October 7, and increasing the term to one year. Appeals have already been lodged by. Mr. ‘P. Louis, the owner, and H. A. Telford, the trainer, who are similarly affected. In the first prosecution of its kind in British legal history, Solomon Leon Silverberg, a jeweller, was sentenced at the Old Bailey to nine months’ imprisonment for fraud, because a cheque which he gave a bookmaker for losses was dishonoured; Mr. Justice Oliver said: “There is absolutely no reason why a bookmaker should not be put as much under the protection of the law'- as any other person who carries on honest work.” The “Daily Express” points out that the Gaming Act, 1845, which makes betting debts irrecoverable in a civil court, will not save a person found guilty of such a fraud.
