ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY LONDON, October 26. The z\rchbishop of Canterbury (Most Rev. Dr. William Temple) died to-day after a sudden heart attack. His death was unexpected. Dr. Temple was aged 63 and was enthroned as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1942 in succession to Archbishop Cosmo Lang. He was the son of a former Archbishop of Canterbury. He was previously Archbishop of York and Bishop of Manchester. The Archbishop died at a hotel at Westgate-on-Sea, where he had been resting for the past month. He was previously confined to his home at Canterbury for several weeks when he was reported to be suffering from an infective process, which was slow in responding to treatment. PRINCESS BEATRICE LONDON, Oct. 26. Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice, great-aunt of the King and last surviving child of Queen Victoria, died to-day in her eighty-eighth year. Her health had been declining for some time. In 1885 Princess Beatrice married Prince Henry of Battenburg at Whippingham Church, Isle of Wight. Her husband’s death 11 years later on his return from the Ashanti Expedition was a severe blow to Princess Beatrice, and from that time to the end of Queen Victoria’s life she remained near to her mother. Her children were three sons and a daughter, of whom the youngest, Maurice, was killed near Ypres on October 27, 1914. Another son, Lord Leopold Mountbatten, died in 1922. The surviving eldest son of Princess Beatrice is the Marquis of Carisbrooke, who is 57. The daughter, Princess Ena, Who is a year younger, is the former Queen of Spain, having married King Alphonso in 1906.

Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander, Southeast Asia, is a nephew of Princess Beatrice.
