DE GAULLE GOVT.

GENERAL “RECOGNITION.”

(Rec. 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 23. Britain, the United States, Russia and Canada have recognised the de Gaulle Administration as the provisional Government of France. An announcement to this effect was made in the various capitals to-day'. The Associated Press points out that the recognition completely changes the basis of relationship between France and the Allied Powers. General de Gaulle now ranks as chief of the Government and head of the State, approximating to the positions held by Mr. Churchill, Mr. Roosevelt and Mr. Stalin. Among the practical results will be the right of the French authority to claim the French funds frozen in the United States since France’s fall, which are estimated at 900,000,000 dollars credited to the Bank of France, plus several hundred millions in private funds.

Mr. Stettinius, announcing the United States, recognition, intimated that most of France, including Paris, had been designated by the Allied military authorities as the interior zone, in which the French authorities have complete.responsibility. Mr. Stettinius also intimated that Mr. Jefferson Caffery will now assume the United States Ambassadorship to France.

The French Committee of National Liberation has been recognised by Australia. Recognition by South Africa and New Zealand are being conveyed through the British Government. Other United Nations’ Governments have already accorded recognition. WELLINGTON, October 24. Mr. Fraser announced to-day that the New Zealand Government associated itself with the United Kingdom and the other Dominions, the United States, and the Soviet, in formally recognising the French Provisional Government. This was recognition of the French nation.
