RUNANGA v. ST. COLUMBA

Returning the visit paid by Runanga Club a week ago, members of the St. Columba Club met the Runanga Debating Club at Runanga on Thursday evening. The judge was Mr. P. Heath. The first debate entitled “That the hire purchase system at present in vogue is to be deplored” was won by Runanga (affirmative) with 179 points. St. Columba taking the negative scored 177 points. The individual points were: Runanga: Ron. McTaggart 64 (reply 2), Robt. McTaggart 65, A. Keown 48. St. Columba: J. Power 68 (reply 2), B. Knowles 60, W. Rathbun 47. The second debate, “That ambition is a virtue” was also won by Runanga (negative), with a total of 210 points to St. Columba’s 199. , The individual points were: Runanga: S. Braithwaite 66 (reply 6), W. Williams 62, J. Kelly 76. St. Columba (affirmative): M. G-, Kelly, 58 (reply 18), G. Walters 61, M. J. Gallagher 62. A number of visitors attended, and supper was served at the conclusion. This was the last inter-Club debate for this season, but it is hoped to revive the West Coast Debating League early next year, and to arrange more meetings for next season.
