SEVEN MORE CONVICTIONS

LONDON, Sept. 11.

The German News Agency announced that the People’s Court has dealt with German civilians involved in the attempt against Hitler’s lite on July 20. The accused, who were all sentenced to death by hanging were: Karl Goerdeler, former Mayor of Leipzig, Count von Helldorf, former chief of the Berlin police, Wilhelm Leuschner, former Hessian Minister of the Interior; Josef Wuermer, lawyer; Ulrich von Hasse], former Ambassador at Rome; Paul le Jeunojung, diplomat; Trott Zusolz, of the German Foreign Office. The News Agency stated that Goerdelei- was intended for the post of Chancellor of the Reich had the plot succeeded. Leuschner was to have been Vice-Chan-cellor and von Hassel, Foreign Minister and Minister of National Econ- : omy> __ J TWO MILLION CASUALTIES LONDON, Sept. 11. A British United Press correspondent at Allied Supreme Headquarters says: The Germans since D Day have lost one thousand men an hour or a total of two million men. These figures include all the Germans killed, lor wounded, or taken prisoner on all fronts. The estimate is conservatively based on official reports from Allied Headquarters on the Western ; Front, from the Russian front, and i from the Mediterranean. The total does not include German losses in j guerrilla lighting in Southern France and the Balkans. Germany’s last reserves have been called up. Her 1 greatest losses have been on the Rus- ; sian front. There Germany had 220 1 divisions at the beginning of the RusSian Summer offensive. Recent rei ports indicate that there possibly are one hundred and thirty German divisions left on the Russian front, ini eluding those in the Baltic countries. Germans then had sixty-live divisions ; in the west. It is doubtful if she now jhas more than thirty-five divisions, i Germany has twenty-five divisions i that are threatened with a collapse in the Balkans, where every line of j escape has been shattered. The total of the German casualties on the Russian front is estimated at 1,300,000. In the west the German casualties have been about six hundred thousand in Northern France, seventy thousand in I Southern France, and fifty-two thousand in Italy.

“Lord Haw Haw” (William Joyce) has not been heard broadcasting from Germany for more than a week. His scripts are now read by his German understudy, Edward Deitz, over the Cologne wave-length. Early in the war “Lord Haw Haw” broadcast four times daily, and caused the British authorities considerable bother in contradicting lies which his unsophisticated listeners helped to spread. In 1939 and 1940 he was believed to be the world’s most-listen-ed-to radio commentator.
