HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, August 17. The Hokitika Borough Council met yesterday. Present: The Mayor (Mr. A. R. Elcock), Crs. C. Caliani, H. C. Peart, D. Pettigrew, W. H. Stopforth, L. S. Ross, S. G. Roberts, S. G. HavilL and A. C. Armstrong. The treasurer’s statement showed: Receipts £441/9/, expenditure £l,142/7/9. Accounts amounting to £l,070/1/8 were passed lor payment. Abattoir report: Stock slaughtered for month of July amounted to 31 cows, 15 heifers, 62 bullocks, 70 sheep, 7 lambs, 4 pigs, 8 calves. Fees collected for month amounted to £BO 14/10. Fees for corresponding month last year £9l/16/8. The Foreman’s and Sexton’s reports were read and approved. Mrs. E. C. West, Fitzherbert Street, applied for permission to instal septic lank on section 3332 Fitzherbert Street outfall to connect with a drainage shaft. —Granted subject to Health Regulations. Mr. O. Christien, Rolleston Street, applied for permission to instal a septic tank on section 871/2 Rolleston Street, outfall to connect to a drainage shaft. —Granted subject to Health Regulations. The Secretary, Hokitika Methodist Church Trustees, wrote pointing out that some time ago the Council resolved to have the open drain in Tancred Street and in Sewell Street alongside the frontage of the Methodist Church Property filled in but so far the work has not been done and asking if the Council would have the work undertaken as soon as possible. —Referred to Works Committee. Mr. M. Baird, secretary Hokitika Cricket Club asked whether Council would but down the cricket pitch in Cass Square in concrete as the put pitch is unsuitable and that the Club have to play its home matches at the Mental Hospital Ground.

The Superintendent and Engineer Kanieri Electric Limited advised that to facilitate the falling of trees on the north side of Cass Square along the Stafford Street frontage that the Company is prepared at its own exn°nse to take immediate steps temporarily to deviate the present electee line along Stafford Street through Cass Square. The line would run on the south side of the trees and between these and the cycling track. — Approved. Mr. T. Spoor wrote asking that a nipe drain be installed from the boundary of his-property across the 'botpath at his property in Weld Street to get rid of the surface water and later to be used for waste water from the house.—Referred to clerk. Mr. J. Hewer and S. G. Stephens billiards room proprietors, submitted a petition signed by 65 residents asking that the hours during which the billiards room may remain open be extended from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays inclusive -- Agreed, applicants to pay costs. P. M. Coyle asked for the use of the unoccupied part of Whitcombe Souare for grazing his horse and offering to clear the land of scrub and gorse and renew the fences if he has the paddock rent free for 12 months and at the end of that time the Council to fix a reasonable rent.—Agreed. The Hokitika Beautifying Association wrote asking permission for the Association to plant trees in Stafford Street on both sides of the street from Fitzherbert Street to the east Borough boundary. Also asking Council to nrohibit the tethering of cows in Sale Street from Stafford Street to the Quay as the Association is anxious that the cherry trees recently planted should be protected as much as possible.—Deferred for a month. Cows to be prohibited from Sale Street.
