CAMPAIGN IN ITALY

ALLIES’. GENERAL ADVANCE

LONDON, June 16. To-day’s communique from Allied Headquarters in Italy states: The Allied armies in Italy again advanced along the whole front. The enemy, in the Adriatic sector, has withdrawn, and only slender- contact has been maintained. Eighth Army troops captured Narni and Term and also advanced rapidly over .twenty-five miles and captured ’Lodi. Other Eighth Forces to the west advanced some ten miles north of Orvieto.

The Fifth Army on their left also advanced and have taken a number of towns, the most important of which is Acquapendente. Leading elements are approaching Crosseto.

AERIAL OFFENSIVE

LONDON, June 16

To-day’s Allied communique from Italy states referring to air operations: Medium bombers yesterday attacked a number of railway bridges along the west coast of Italy and in the Florence area, also railway yards at Via Reggio. Long-range fighters attacked aircraft on the ground at several aerodromes in Southern France.

Fighter-bombers attacked railway lines, highways and motor transport. Heavy bombers did not operate. Seven enemy ’planes were destroyed tor the loss of eighteen. No enemy ’planes were reported over the battle area.
