PRICE OF MILK

MR. O’BRIEN’S STATEMENT.

The Minister of Transport and Member for Westland (Mr. O'Brien) in a telephone conversation with the “Star” from Wellington this afternoon made the following statement on the milk price situation in the Greymouth district:—

“Understanding that there were difficulties being faced by the milk producers in the Greymouth district during the Winter period because of the increased price of fodder, the Government sent officers to the Greymouth district to investigate the position. These officers reported that the increases in cost which had to be borne by the producers could be met for the lime being by an addition of 2d a gallon, one penny of which was to be borne by the vendors and one penny by the State. In the meantime a comprehensive inauiry into the whole question of milk production on the West Coast by a responsible committee set up by the Government will take place. These conditions,” added Mr. O’Brien, “were communicated to the producers’ representative by telephone last evening, but the producers had previously carried a resolution to increase the price of milk in defiance of the Government.”
