OPERA HOUSE—To-night: ‘‘South American George."

If you can imagine George Formby as a theatrical extra, who suddenly finds himself forced into impersonating a highly temperamental opera star, whom he happens to resemble, you will have some idea of the hilarious fun and adventures that makes “South American George,” showing at the Opera House, '"the grand and glorious entertainment that it is. Formby plays three roles in this devastating comedy; he is the hapless George Butters a lad with operatic ambitions, but no ability, the opera star he impersonates and the opera star himself. From beginning to end “South American George" is packed with a lavish assortment of brand new gags and comedy situations. The operatic sequences are outrageously funny and the climax which begins with a free-for-all during the last act of an opera and leads, through a succession of excruciatingly funny action scenes that leaves the audience breathless with laughter must be seen to be believed. The songs include: “The Barmaid of the Rose and Crown”; “I’ll Do it With a Smile”; “My Spanish Guitar” and “Swing Mama.”

The action takes place in the adventureladen atmosphere of a South African diamond mine. George Brent plays the role of a soldier-of-fortune mine foreman who meets his share of murder, theft, and intrigue at the hands of a ruthless mine owner, portrayed by George Tobias. He is accused of the murder of a rival mine operator and clears himself after many a harrowing escape. Brenda Marshall supplies the romantic interest when she allies herself with Brent in an effort to prove his innocence. Lee Patrick in the role of Tobias’ embittered wife gives the story a novel twist that will surprise Ihe most sophisticated picture goer.
