NORTH ISLAND DEFICIT WELLINGTON, June 13. In the North Island for the week ended yesterday consumption of coal by the railways was several hundred tons more than was received into the depots during the week. The amount received into depots was 6397 tons, and consumption was 6957 tons. The position was better in the South Island. Coal received into the depots for the week, was 4103 tons, and. the

quantity consumed 3713 tons. The estimated stock of coal tor the railwavs in the North Island yesterday morning was 13,986 tons, and the Monday before it was 14,546 tons. In the South Island the estimated stock yesterday was 5502 tons, an increase of 390 tons compared with the previous Monday. . . In response to an inquiry the Railways Department indicated that a considerable improvement in supplies would be necessary to build up a sufficient reserve to warrant the removal of the present travel restrictions.
