LABOUR REVERSES GENERAL

WEST COAST RESULTS

The Dominion local body elections were held on Saturday, when Mayors, Councils and Boards to administer local affairs for the next three years were elected. The polling' was not heavy and the proportion of voters was not comparable with that at a Parliamentary election. Generally, Labour candidates -suffered defeat.

In Greymouth on a roll of 5,399 a total of 2946 individuals recorded votes, as compared with 2,780 m the prevous election, when the total on the roll was 371 less. , Three new members were electea to the Greymouth Borough Council, Messrs A. L. McKay (Citizens ), T. Caldwell (Labour) and W. Herring (Independent), but all of che sitting members retained their seats. The poll was headed by Mr. P. Blanehfield (Labour) who, as is customary, will be Deputy-Mayor to Mr. 11.I 1 . A. Kitchingham (Citizens), who was re-eleci-ed unopposed. Mr. Hutcnmson one of the new aspirants fiom the Citizens’ Committee, is on y otes behind the candidate who polled lowest of the Councillors, Mi. J • Saunders, but hiere is then a big ga to the next on the list. Labour have four members in the new Council, as compared with three in the last, while there will be lour mem bers who stood as representatives of the Citizens’ Committee, one independent, and the Mayor (Citizens ). ■ The only woman candidate. In the latter election their opponent was Mr . L. Turley, who was 200 odd votes behind Mr Ryall, his nearest opponent. Mr Mulcare topping the poll, as he did for the Hospital and the Power Board. . , ~ Mr W. Fisher lost his seat on the Grey Electric Power Board, representing the combined districts of part of the counties of Grey, Inangahua and Westland. Here Messrs Mulcare and Clayton were re-elected, and Mr Ryan is the new member. Details of the voting are as follow:

new members of the Board representing the Borough, while Mr. J. r. Laing (Citizens’) failed to retain his seat. This was Mrs. Parfitt’s first municipal election, but Mr. Parlitt has previously sewed on the Hospital Board. Mr. W. E. J. Steer (Citizens ), a new aspirant, topped the poll in the election of two Borough representatives on the.Harbour Board, defeating the present Chairman of the Board, Mr. J. B. Kent (Labour) by a narrow margin. Mr. W. E. Pring (Citizens ) lost his seat on the Harbour Board, though he was third on the list and well' ahead of the other candidate, Mr. A. Panther (Labour). . Mr. Blanehfield topped the poll in the election .for four Borough representatives on the Power Board, where Mr. Pring lost his seat, this time to a newcomer, Mr. A. L. McKay, who was also elected to the Borough Council. Messrs W. H. Parfitt and Kent were re-elected to the Board. A scrutiny of the votes commenced this morning, and the Returning Officer (Mr. F. H. Denton) stated tnat the official final figures will not be available for three to four days. TWO COUNCILLORS DEFEATED

With thirteen candidates in the field tor the six seats on the Runanga Borough Council, the largest ever, there was added interest in Saturday’s poll, and the number of votes recorded, 733, was a record, from a total roll of 1157. Two sitting members, Messrs C. Barrow and J. Lun. were re-elected, the first-named topping the. poll, and , Messrs S. O'Neif and W. Williams, sitting councillors, were defeated. The representation on the Hospital Board remains unchanged, Mr F. Oakley retaining the scat with case. For the combined seat on the Harbour Board .shared with the Brunner Borough. Mr J. J. Devine succeeded against two opponents. The sitting member was Mr*J. Smeaton, who did not contest the seat. For the seat on the Power Board, with the record number of four candidates in the field, a newcomer to local body politics, Mr L. N. Downes, was successful. A young man, he is an electrician, employed by the State Mines Depavtmen*. .The sitting member was Mr J. Unwin, who recently left the district to reside in Wellington. BRUNNER BOROUGH POLLS. SITTING MEMBERS RETURNED Only about 50 per cent, of the people on the roll in the Brunner Borough exercised their votes. COUNCIL CHAIRMAN DEFEATED.

In the Inangahua County elections the retiring County Chairman, Mr. W. T. Hempseed did not retain his seat. He was the only sitting member to be defeated. Mr. J. F. Coghlan was the only sitting member of the Inangahua Hospital Board to be defeated. Mr. W. Blackadder was re-elected unopposed for the Maruia Riding of the Council. Mr. W. WELLINGTON, May 28. The Citizens’ Association candidates, as in the previous election, swept the board at. the local polls m Wellington. Mr. Will Appleton, Cijsens’ Association candidate lor tne Mayoralty, beat the Labour candidate Mr. James Roberts (who is Dominion president of the Ftibour Partv) by 29,588 votes to 20.2 Lb. Again' no" Labour candidates were elected to the Wellington City Council. the full Citizens’ Association ticket succeeding. Mr-. Knox Gilmer topped the poll for both the City Council and Hospital Board. Chapman, M.P. , , j The power of the Citizens ticxei was strikingly illustrated in the case of Miss Amy Kane, who, as a Citizen’s candidate, was second on the oo'l for the Hospital Board, but as in"independent for the City Council finished in third to last place below all the Labour candidates, and also below the Communist candidate. As in previous elections, all the Citizens’ candidates were returned for the city seats on the Wellington Hospital and Harbour Boards. The Labour Paity which previously had no representation on the Lower Hutt City Council now has one representative, who secured one of the three new scats, .1 he Mayoral voting was: J. CHRISTCHURCH CHRISTCHURCH, May 23. As in 1941, the polling in Chr.stchurch municipal elections was fight on Saturday. The number eligible to voW in Christchurch has increased by about 10,200 since 1941. On die. 1941 election about 45.7 per cent of those on the roll exercised their votes for the Mayoralty. It is estimated that 46.4 per cent of those on the roll voted on Saturday in rhe Mayoral contest. The sitting Mayor, Mr E H. Andrews, defeated his predecessor in office, Mr R. M. MacFarlane MP., bv 8,979 votes. This majority has not been equalled since 1927 The number of valid voces cast' for the Mayoralty was 36,119. This has only twice been exceeded. There were 39,803 votes cast in 1935, when Mr D. G. Sullivan defeated Sir Hugh Acland by 329 votes. There were 36,375 votes cast m 1938, when Mr MacFarlane defeated Dr. Jc.in Guthrie by 1,121 votes. The Citizens’ Association canaida.es •mined their most sweeping victory over Labour opponents since Labour first became a force in local body politics 20 years ago, a preliminary count giving the Citizens’ Association candidates 15 of 16 seats on the City Council, eight of ten City seats on the North Canterbury Hospital Board,

three of four City seats on the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and the four central district seats on the North Canterbury Catchment Board and Waimakariri River 'Trust. DUNEDIN DUNEDIN, May 28. 'ln the Dunedin Mayoral contest, Mr D. C. Cameron (Citizens’ Association) was elected, defeating Dr. p. G. McMillan (Labour) by 15,859 votes to 15,169, a majority of 690. For the 12 seats on the City Council six Citizens’ and six Labour' candidates were returned. Three sitting members, all sponsored by the Citizens’ Association, lost their seats and were replaced by three Labour nominees.

On the Otago Hospital Board, Labour will have five representatives compared with three previously, and on the Otago Harbour Board its representation will be increased from two to three.

TARANAKI NEW PLYMOUTH, May 28. Candidates nominated by the New Plymouth Labour Party for the Borough Council, New Plymouth Harbour Board, and the Taranaki Hospital Board failed to gain a single seat, Citizens’ tickets being returned in all cases. The contest for the Mayoralty of Patea, which was regarded as a Labour stronghold, had a surprise result, the sitting Mayor (Mr F. Ramsbottom) defeating the Labour candidate, Mr A. H. Langslow, who contested the Patea seat at the General Election, by 378 votes to 238.

WANGANUI

WANGANUI, May 28. In Wanganui, the Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., the sitting Mayor, sponsored by the Labour Party, was returned with a majority of 937 votes, defeating the Citizens’ Association candidate, Dr. G. J. Adams. Mr Rogers polled 5647 votes and Dr. Adams 4710. Control of the Wanganui City Council has passed from the Labour Party to the Citizens’ Association. eight Citizens and four Labour candidates having been elected. With a Labour Mayor, who has _ a casting ''ote as well as a deliberative vote, tiie Citizens’ councillors can counr on a majority of at least two on all contentious matters.

In all other local bodies control remains in the hands of anti-Labour members. A feature of the City Council election was the defeat of the Deputy-Mayor (Mr J. J. Scott), who can be ranked next to Mr Rogers and Mr J. B. Cotterill as the most prominent Labour figure in the city.

Hansen (chairman) re-elected unopnosed. Hospital Board: H. Fredricksen, A England (sitting members), H. Stratford and Mrs. M. M. Livingston. This is the first occasion that women candidates have contested the hospital board, two out of three having been elected.
